  2. First day using the #corebootbook with #LMDE5. I am traveling with it and connected to wifi at another location other than my home or office.

So far #LinuxMint #Debian Edition 5 is working fine. I am writing down ideas for simple "how to" style videos.

Just to clarify, I am not a Linux Mint or Debian fanboy, but I think it is a useful place for people to start and build skills.

  3. #corebootbook update:

I successfully installed #LinuxMint #Debian Edition 5 on it. The installer still crashed at a certain point, like with LMDE4, but I found a way to work around that and did a successful installation of #LMDE5 on the Dell Chromebook 11 laptop.

  4. #Coreboot has been sort of an amazing transformation of my #Lenovo #X220 So many talk about the getting rid of spyware and such from #Intel, bit the real benefit is that I can now install RAM and a new wireless card. Not to mention, the boot time is like 15-20 seconds....

Also ein eingermaßen aktuelles, aber trotzdem preiswertes und gebraucht zu bekommendes Notebook, auf das man (scheinbar?) mit machbarem Aufwand ein #FOSS BIOS bekommen kann (#Coreboot).

  8. I'm about to install on my . Any known hiccups or recommendations? I'm planning to use a and flash it from there. 🤔

  9. Yay it works! \o/ I can use an #FT2232H mini with #flashrom to access SPI flash chips. Woop woop! :)
    ✨👩🏻‍💻✨

I want to use it for debugging via EHCI though. #coreboot *should* support that. So far I had no success, will try different configs.

  10. Status Update on #corebootbook

I've been using the Dell Chromebook 11, freed from #Google with #coreboot as my primary laptop for at least three months.

It has a weak processor, only 4GB memory and 16GB of storage... yet it serves most of my needs for a mobile computer.

I'm running #Devuan #Linux, as that is the only Linux distro that I got everything working, including sound, on this laptop. Sound just wouldn't work on most other distros on this laptop (except the aging #galliumos ).

The 16GB storage limit is a bit annoying, as my Thunderbird email profile is quite large and would press the space limits of that 16GB drive. I may insert an SD card and configure Thunderbird so the profile is kept on an SD card.

So far, the #corebootbook works for what I need it to. I use it to log into my phone.com account while I am out and about, using a mobile hotspot for internet. I can keep up on business phone messages and not use a mobile phone (staying away from stock and OEM Android for #privacy reasons, but do occasionally use /e/ OS version of Android that is wifi only).

I may switch to a different faster laptop in the coming months, but the proof of concept for usefulness of the #corebootbook has been proven to me.

I plan to give a few more away to my subscribers. I also have some that I can sell, if someone wants to just buy one already set up.

  11. @ellenor I don’t need high performance so I use ~15 y.o. hardware that pre-dates the spy chips. But still my hardware was not targeted by #coreboot / #libreboot, so my firmware is non-free. I also have some newer hardware that I pulled out of dumpsters (thus did not contribute to the intel M.E./ AMD #trustzone spy chip market), which I just use for occasional experiments.

  15. I've been testing to see why my #nextcloud test installation is so slow switching between apps (going from Calendar to Dashboard, or Dashboard to Files).

Went through some of the optimizations recommended. Slight improvement, but still over 10 second load times on my #corebootbook laptop.

Took a break from it out of frustration, went to my workstation and decided to check out Nextcloud from there. Loaded in half the time.

What's going on? Had a hunch.

Opened htop on one monitor, loaded the Nextcloud Dashboard in the browser. All four cores of the Xeon processor go up to over 50% until the Dashboard loads.

The slow down is on the client side !!! (or at least some of it)

The javascript clientside is doing so much and requiring enough CPU that it takes my lowly corebootbook more than twice as long to load the Nextcloud app.

Other web pages and web apps are not this slow on that same machine.

I really want to love Nextcloud as I plan on hosting it for some of my clients. More than ten second load times are unacceptable, though. Five seconds might be bearable, but not ideal.
  16. I should give Mate another look on Devuan, especially on #corebootbook laptops. I was looking for a slightly lighter weight DE for laptops with limited resources. Cinnamon works okay (using it right now on an Acer corebookbook). XFCE had a show stopping bug when I tried it on a physical laptop, which I wrote about before.

I should try Mate on the same hardware and see how I like it.

One of my sons used Mate for years and liked it.

    Thanks for the reply 😃
