Weekly output: Archer Aviation, an Italian unicorn, biometric device security, credit-card security
I had a second week in a row of transatlantic travel, this time to Milan. This was my first visit to that city in more than 23 years, and I had barely enough time between work commitments to set aside my laptop for a couple of hours and eyeball the Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. I realize what a First World problem that is.
10/19/2026: Archer Aviation Touts Completion of ‘No Roads’ Air-Taxi Flight Tour of California, PCMag
Because I’ve spent enough time in the Bay Area for work and personal reasons, a mention in Archer’s announcement about its Midnight electric air taxi flying from Oakland International Airport to the Marina in San Francisco caught my eye–because I know there’s no equivalent to an airport or even helipad in that posh waterfront neighborhood.
10/21/2026: Inside a Unicorn: Lessons from the Journey to Scale, CES Unveiled Milan
My trip to Milan for the Consumer Technology Association’s event there began with a publicist for the Italian Trade Agency asking if I’d like to be on a delegation they were putting together, with flights and lodging included. That seemed like a good networking opportunity, but then I noticed some blank spots on the schedule and asked if CTA could use me in any of them. That led to me quizzing Eugenio Monteleone, chief operating officer of the Milan-based AI startup Domyn, about how that company is charting a different course from other AI developers.
10/23/2026: The phone security feature everyone should enable — and not worry about, The Washington Post
The idea for this piece started with my reading the many confused comments on the passkeys explainer I wrote for the Post two weeks ago. Alas, the comments on this piece suggest that once again, some people will do literally anything before admitting any weakness in relying on memorized passcodes and passwords.
10/23/2026: The best place to save your credit cards, The Washington Post
After too much experience with data breaches and compromised credit cards, I found that this post basically wrote itself. It may not have sold itself, to judge from the comments; once again, I’m seeing a gigantic gap between people who grasp how cryptography works and everybody else.
