🔗 After cops failed to catch hooligan bike riders, state asks locals for help | Electrek

Ugh kind of hate that they're lumping all e-bikes in with these assholes. These are the people who ride ATVs and dirt bikes on city streets.
My e-bike is a bicycle and I ride it like a bicycle.
I've felt for a while that police need some sort of enduro squad to chase these people. Or how about some damn drones to follow them home and shit.

  6. I LOVE #ebikes & every time I see some yahoo going WAY TOO FAST on em I have the exact same thought: YOU’re why we can’t have nice things. Someone like YOU’s gonna mow down a flock of kids or a gaggle of grandmas & it’ll be The Great E-bike Terror of 2026™️ all because you have a child’s self control

  8. (cont.) With a Class 2 e-bike, you can use max pedal assist to move through that risk period as quickly as possible. My Townie will do 28 mph in 8th at max assist. That gives me more options for managing risk than either of my non-e bikes.

    - At the same time, that's a lot of zip for a bicycle, and I wonder whether kids, say under 16, have the judgment to use it wisely. I see kids zipping around the neighborhood on e-bikes. Be careful!

  10. Further thoughts about e-bikes:

    - The amazing & really useful thing about an e-bike has to do with overtaking. On a bicycle, you're constantly being overtaken by cars, sometimes rudely and & unsafely.

Yet sometimes, due to the nature of the road or the usability of the shoulder, you *have to* occupy the lane. Now, from the cars' POV, you're blocking traffic. They can't overtake, and they'll get mad. This puts you at real risk, so you need to do it judiciously.

  16. @DrMcStrange I just dug in a little deeper: it appears that the first Russian rail terminal in St Petersburg in the 1830s had a pleasure garden (a "Vauxhall") attached to it to entice vistors.

People ended up using the word to describe the whole terminal complex rather than just the pleasure garden, then it was downcoded to a generic eponym for other terminals as the rail lines spread through the Tsarist Empire (much as any periodic thermal spring is called a "geyser" in English, after Geysir in Iceland).
