  1. @xanderl - this is the kind of online film content I love to find. I have Haunters Of The Deep so may well plan that double-bill when Enys Men is available for home viewing.

  6. @richardjfoster @xanderl I made a 'joke' about handing a cabbage to a 20-year-old friend of mine when he dropped one of the large amount of things he was trying to carry.

    Oh, the silence.

I might as well have made a joke referencing the Crimean War. #SoOld

  15. This was Ousmane Sembene's first feature - last year we discussed his second, Mandabi, which is also great (but very different to this one)

"Black Girl" is a very short film (only 60 minutes) but packs a real punch. It's one of only 2 African films on the latest BFI 100 Greatest Films list.

Our discussion of Sembene's "Mandabi" is here -

  16. Our latest podcast discusses Ousmane Sembene's "Black Girl" ("La Noire de ...") (1966)

A young woman from Senegal arrives in France, expecting to be working as a Nanny for a white French couple - instead she finds she's actually working as a domestic servant and becomes increasingly alienated. Meanwhile the white couple are blissfully unaware of any problems and see nothing wrong with their behaviour.

  17. @stovesses @SaltiredPopcorn Enys Men will be on BFI Player - not sure if it will be a rental or part of the subscription, or if it will be an exclusive. They also have "Haunters of the Deep" at the moment as part of a collection curated by Mark Jenkin - good on him for being open about the influence!

  18. Fascinating watching Children's Film Foundation film "Haunters of the Deep" (1984) as a double bill with Enys Men. It's filmed on some of the same locations - as Mark Jenkin says "Having recently re-watched it, I realise I may have borrowed some shots for my film. It obviously made a mark"
