I watched my new copy of _The Postman Always Rings Twice_ (Tay Garnett, 1946) the other day believing I’d seen it before...and that really threw me for a loop; I went in thinking it'd be closer to _Double Indemnity_ (lovers make an airtight murder plan; tension comes from issues which crop up) when (as I gradually realized) this is about lovers who DONT have a good murder plan and double-cross each other at every opportunity. #WhatThomWatched recently (i.e. Halloween-y): Paul Wegener’s _Der Golem_ (the 1920 prequel/remake of his own lost 1915 film) on KinoNow. There’s plenty of versions on YouTube but the Murnau Foundation 2017 restoration is just gorgeous. It was apparently a big deal in both Germany and the U.S. on release and clearly influenced the Universal _Frankenstein_ a decade later. (#WTW 1 of 3) #silentfilm #horror #microreview

Elvis (Josh) Weinstein, who most definitely came before T.V.'s Frank -- he was Dr. Laurence Erhardt alongside Dr. Forrester for both the first local television season ("season 0") and all 13 episodes of season 1 on Comedy Central. Frank does not appear until the 35th episode of the series, Rocketship X-M (s2e1).
That doesn't take anything away from Frank who is certainly one of the best evil sidekicks ever. #deephurting #mst3k

@Alex22 I went to star your post from last year about The Christmas Dragon (and the fact that S13 was excellent) and I boosted it instead -- but you know what? that's appropriate too. I'm poking around Mastodon seeing who's talking about S14 ( #MakeMoreMST3K ! #SeeYouInTheGizmoplex ! #MST3KShowmaker !! etc.) and your excellent posts are reminding me of the biggest argument to keep funding the show: Season 13 (with no Netflix, SyFy, Comedy Central or any network at all) was the _bomb_. SO great!

Not only does this unnamed cat meet a gruesome fate (briefly shown) but there’s a dark running gag with the dumb cop who “loves cats” and then his multiple “that poor dead cat” scenes. Icky! I need to watch it all again now that I get the vibe. FANTASTIC performance by John Garfield and the first time I’ve really seen Lana Turner in her prime; she's amazing. Lots of great character actors including a twinkly Cecil Kellaway but Hume Cronyn stands out as the slimiest lawyer ever. And a great adaptation of James M. Cain even if the title seems a little shaky – what’s the metaphor? The postman is God? Ringing twice? Is there an Amazon and Ring camera update of this?? (#WTW 2 of 4)

(I was watching the first-ever Halloween ep of #MysteryScienceTheater3000 in the #Gizmoplex a couple weeks later – they did _The Mask_ (1961) in glorious black-and-white-and-anaglyph-3D. The intermission break skit was a “Monster Mash”-esque holiday song called “They Can’t Come” about no one showing up to the Halloween party the SOL crew is hosting. Was thrilled to see the Golem referenced in the list of classic movie monsters right alongside cenobytes and Casper! 😆 ) (#WTW 3 of 3)

It’s set in the Jewish ghetto of Prague and of course the art design is amazing. The special effects look great and the Golem (Wegener himself) is both terrifying and empathetic. It’s just as impressive visually as _The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari_ from the same year. But what really struck me was how sensitively the script portrays the Jewish community and their struggles.
