  1. Commercial cloud computing providers #CCCP is #RentierCapitalism par excellence. It isn't even a novel concept in the history of computing. And ONLY in late-stage (hopefully) capitalism could consumption be linguistically akin to #Democratization.

  2. Had my social media self-description certified this evening at a #CIUK networking event. A polite undergrad, presumably here for the Student Cluster Competition, wanted to speak to me about my "PC to #HPC" talk earlier that day.

I did not give a talk today.

So yes, I am that middle aged white guy you know that works on computers. You can never remember his name, but you know it's one of 7 extremely white dude ones from the '80s.

  3. Waiting for a CrossCountry train to Manchester for #CIUK. Trying to prep with some #StuartHall because the #HPC event is going to be intense and I can only take so much undiluted (anarcho?) #capitalism.

  4. @drmorr I also like facilitating discussions, as I get annoyed about the silo'ing of design knowledge. The #NBH (not built here) syndrome that afflicts some projects really is a drag on us all.

  7. @drmorr just learning. My SysAdmin work regularly sits at the intersection of middleware tech-stacks, so trying to understand what's going on. Most of my time is in batch compute ( #Slurm , #HTCondor ). But I keep hearing #CloudNative will eat the world, so am curious if it can properly what the tools I already use can do. 🤨

  8. @fclc @abarker Or maybe without cheap interest rates making borrowing for monopoly efforts near free, it becomes a lot harder to justify expenditure on at this scale on a pipedream to #Automate #AllTheThings. So we should stop.

  9. CW: UCU

It drives me around the bend that union members are so ambivalent and willing to let management lie with statistics. 🤬

Which is also I have no patience for the #cakeism of our union's #SWP contingent as they sell unicorns 🦄 to sector in profound financial distress.

  10. Bouncing back to #HTCondor Workshop material, here is my talk on #EDIA issues in Research Computing. Response was... mixed, but given the scale of the problem, this was expected. 😣

  11. @alexprichard My first thought is: "we will get a trash offer from #UCEA in the next round if we don't", which is understandable. But strike-loss & higher pay-rise might negate each other. And it doesn't solve the institutional inequity problem...

  16. @alexprichard Cannot imagine union relations with #UCEA getting any better while the UK still has a #Tory government. And that's unlikely to change for at least another year. 😭

  22. And to wrap up the session before lunch, Brian Bockelman gives us a Token Taxonomy, with respect to #HTCondor. I appreciate it because #authentication & #authorization still confuse 😖 the heck out of me.

  23. Very engaging talk by Peter Couvares about #IGWN data management issues, particularly the inscrutable errors with data transfer problems on #HTCondor systems. #CVMFS #OSDF

  25. After morning coffee, its now the #CHTC Director, Miron Livy, to talk about how Data management & Security intertwine.

  26. @realmurphy Cheers. If you know other #dHTC folks, feel free to tag them. I have been living in #HPC land for too long. 😬

  27. LOTS of discussion about the job life cycle and what are the reponsibilities of the main #HTCondor daemons. This can get quite complicated with multi-pool & ephemeral clusters.

  28. Todd Tannenbaum, #HTCondor software lead from #CHTC @ the University of Wisconsin kicks off the workshop with a broad overview of #HTCSS terminology and components. indico.cern.ch/event/1274213/c
