  1. Hey #Forkiverse! First things first, an #introduction is in order (post your own so people can get to know you):

Next, follow some active hashtags that you’re interested in, and maybe some you didn’t know you’d be:

I find it easier to read CamelCase hashtags, and people using screen readers appreciate hashtags to be at the end of your posts (not embedded).

Make your images accessible by adding alt text, which is also a secret cheat code for stuffing a bunch of text into a post. But you should always use that for more descriptive text. I take screenshots of text and use alt text for transcriptions. There’s bots you can follow to give you reminders or even produce the alt text if you forget (@altbot). Some clients have reminders, too.

AI slop is not appreciated here. Be mindful of why and when you are employing LLM technologies. General machine learning is more well-tolerated.

There’s no algorithms to push content to the eyeballs here so you’ll need to follow and share by boosting the good stuff. That’s why you need to use hashtags, but also remember there’s no algorithms to game so make it readable and relevant to your readership.

Some oddities might stand out. Quote posting is quite new. You’ll see that not all replies to a thread get federated (spread), for various reasons. Search can be challenging. It all has to do with the nature of a truly decentralized protocol and communities. We’re still working on ironing out what works, and getting the developers to work on the right priorities.

Speaking of which, you *can* change your instance (community), but you *can’t* take your posts with you. Principles of the open #IndyWeb still apply here: if you truly want to *own* your content, you need to self-host. You can get your Ghost or Wordpress website to post to the #Fediverse, and there are ways to do it with Hugo and other static site generators as well. See @blog for an example.

    Welcome! 🤗

  6. Folks, with the #F5 boxes, I tried to tell you all, you’ve got to get the network security devices out of your networks, stat. They are all inherently vulnerable. In the past I would have said, well put a WAF in front of it, but now I just think that these are all ticking time bombs and you need to redesign your network to not have hardware that constantly needs to be patched and possibly has backdoors implanted that can’t be monitored and probably has bad actors running loose who are pwning all your stuff right now as we speak. I can’t even keep my gist library of all the discovered vulnerabilities in various manufacturers’ network devices properly updated. I gave a talk about this subject earlier this year and an entire room of network security guys was nodding along with me. So everyone knows the jig is up and it’s time to throw the inherently vulnerable F5 and Fortinet and Citrix boxes into the metal recycling heap. #InfoSec

  7. ✨ Thread Intro: Visualizing Cosmic Inflation and the Big Bang ✨

Ever wondered how our universe began? 🤔

I'm exploring cosmic inflation—the rapid expansion of space driven by the mysterious inflaton field. My short, illustrative video clips represent key stages of this theory, starting from a hypothetical quantum field through inflation, quantum fluctuations, reheating into Big Bang plasma, and formation of tiny primordial black holes (PBHs).

Earlier, I shared a visualization showing how some of these PBHs might have evaporated into Hawking radiation, leaving subtle imprints (Hawking relics) that possibly influenced the formation of the first stars and galaxies. hachyderm.io/@suzannealdrich/1

👇 Follow along to see each step illustrated clearly and explained scientifically—complete with references to current theories and observational evidence from missions like JWST, DESI, Planck, and more!

Note: These visuals are conceptual illustrations—not literal representations of the extreme energies and forces involved.

  8. @suzannealdrich The Minisforum UM890 Pro is a nice #MiniPC. That #AMD #Ryzen 8945HS is a nice #APU :) You may get reasonable performance out the #Radeon 780M #iGPU for #AI and #ML tasks and it has a #RDNA3

If this the only server, then #Proxmox would be a good option for VMs and #LXC containers. Proxmox uses #Debian so you can #Docker or #Podman. Just watch your compute resources :)

If only accounts could earn the awareness and distribution instead of buying it... This was our original discussion/direction when advocating for #SocialMedia growth. The intent was #Cluetrain, not #AdWeek

I started my first internet agency before ATT's banner ad debuted on @WIRED The point then, as now, is PEOPLE. But people do interact with orgs, it should just be on the people's terms, free of unwanted noise. #VRM

  10. “Records reviewed by WIRED also show that DHS’s hasty approval of Fortify last May was enabled by dismantling centralized privacy reviews and quietly removing department-wide limits on facial recognition—changes overseen by a former Heritage Foundation lawyer and Project 2025 contributor, who now serves in a senior DHS privacy role.”

“DHS—which has declined to detail the methods and tools that agents are using, despite repeated calls from oversight officials and nonprofit privacy watchdogs—has used Mobile Fortify to scan the faces not only of “targeted individuals,” but also people later confirmed to be US citizens and others who were observing or protesting enforcement activity.”

“Directive 026-11 stated that facial recognition should not be used as the sole basis for law or civil enforcement actions and that US citizens should have the right to opt out when collection isn’t for a law enforcement purpose.”

“Fortify was fast-tracked less than two months after Directive 026-11 disappeared, in May 2025. CBP and ICE privacy officers alone concluded that no new privacy assessment was required under federal law—an authority it did not previously possess. Records show that such determinations historically rested with the DHS senior director of privacy compliance, a headquarters official acting on behalf of the department’s chief privacy officer and independent of operational agencies.”

“Senator Markey and colleagues this week introduced legislation aimed at prohibiting ICE and CBP from using certain facial-recognition and biometric surveillance tools, saying the agencies have built a sweeping surveillance apparatus that is being used far from the border to scan people without consent, accountability, or clear legal limits. The full text of the bill, short-titled the ICE Out of Our Faces Act, was unavailable at time of writing.”

Trump is pushed into the ring in his greasy red MAGA underwear, shivering and puddled in a cold sweat, the heat and light of stage lights blinding him from above, immense crowds surrounding and deafeningly booing this ridiculous spectacle, when suddenly, a broad figure leaps up onto the ropes, throwing shade, his booming voice inquisitively projects, his wide smile confidently gleaming,

  22. Has any of you ever seen #WondLa on AppleTV? I’ve been binging all weekend. It’s an animated sci-fi fantasy about a future in which humans have retreated underground to be raised from infancy by robots and trained to survive on the surface after they’ve passed an aptitude test. Life on Earth was wiped out but returned using an alien technology which allowed an entire biome of Life 2.0 to flourish. Our main character, Eva, grows up in this environment and must navigate through an intricate plot line involving the new human society she grows into, and the alien settlers who have become Earth’s new residents, and her friends. #nowplaying #tvshows

  23. Hey big American corporations. You backed employer-based coverage and a watered-down #ACA instead of a #PublicOption or #MedicareForAll. Now premiums, deductibles, and payroll contributions rise every year. Open enrollment means less care and higher costs. If you want lower employment costs and a healthier workforce, stop running healthcare. Standardize a #UniversalClaimForm, expand #Medicare eligibility, and let companies make products instead of pretending to run medicine. Make it so.

  24. Today is October 18th, 2025 and a historic #NoKings rally has taken place in #Coupeville, #WA, attended by thousands of peaceful protesters practicing their 1st Amendment rights.

It’s a goldmine, filled with interesting discussions, the most niche possible, nothing like you could ever find in the mainstream flesh.

Then we went commercial. The ISPs, search engine portals, and big websites funneling people into massive groups of random amalgamation communities. No real cohesion or commonality, just a trough to feed from for ad monetization. Followed quickly with walled gardens of all sizes and shapes, and also questionable allegiances to community vs. commercial interest. Soon even these groups were torn asunder, and needed to find a way back…
