    Jacqueline de Jong

    Overlooked member of The Situationist International. I remember her mentioned a few times in Knabb's SI Anthology. An interesting life & post-SI career.

    "Self-taught Dutch painter, sculptor, and graphic artist Jacqueline de Jong, known for her inextinguishable commitment to figuration and for founding the landmark periodical the Times, died June 29 in Amsterdam following a brief illness."

  2. What I suspect is a flint core, picked up at work yesterday. There is a vein of redness running through the grey, coinciding in part with a band of tiny glittering crystals on the broken surface. A camera phone really cannot do it justice, I'm afraid! I wonder if the red vein and crystals governed the choice to work the flint?

  9. A piece of sarsen debitage found at Stonehenge, 51 km away, came from a group of boulders at Bramdean, arranged in their current position by a Colonel Greenwood in the 19th century. Nevertheless the spot does seem to fall on some interesting alignments, including the one presented here. It takes in Hinton Ampner church, a crossroads on Gander Down, the length of the southern cloister that surrounds the Fromond Chantry at Winchester College, and St Michael's church nearby #sarsens #Stonehenge

  11. Running deer in Rownest Wood, 10th February, 2012.

    Brought to a standstill as 20-30 fallow deer swiftly crossed the road in front of me...

    Seconds later, only three dark shapes can be discerned running through the woodland, to the left of the pair of trees in the foreground. The piano on the radio - possibly César Franck's Violin Sonata in A - seems to trace the urgent, fleet-footed rhythm of their departure, as the violin weaves in and out in flight.

  15. Gratifying to see my essay cited in the new book, 'Timeless Joyce: A Hundred Years of Ulysses' by Asun Lopez-Varela Azcárate, 2023. Quite generous use of it, I'd say, especially regarding the identification of the star, Aldebaran, and extensive paraphrases of the mythological material on oxen and bees, lacking direct citations within the text. Attentive readers of the book might like to look at this for sources mdpi.com/2077-1444/9/11/375 #Ulysses #Ulysses100 #Aldebaran #JamesJoyce #FinnegansWake

  17. "Better to be thought a fool," he said. Austin Osman Spare never attempted to disabuse his wealthier, more socially-advantaged contemporaries, such as Dion Fortune and Aleister Crowley, of the impression that he thought it was the pie & eel gland that was the 'Third Eye' of the mystics.

  18. A link to the full text of 'Spirits and Stones: Shamanism and Rock Art in Central Asia and Siberia'. It includes my essay, 'Shamans, lamas and the social effectiveness of rock art' which juxtaposes the practice of Buryat shamanism with the 'artistic materialism' of Asger Jorn. The book explores the 'wilderness of connections' between shamanic practitioners, the spirit world and the world of rock art imagery.

  24. PSYCHOMETRIST

    I listened to a man, and he
    Had no word to say to me:
    Then unto a stone I bowed,
    And it spoke to me aloud.

    - The force that bindeth me so long,
    Once sang in the linnet's song;
    Now upon the ground I lie,
    While the centuries go by!

    - Linnets shall for joy atone
    And be fastened into stone;
    While, upon the waving tree,
    Stones shall sing in ecstasy!

    James Stephens, The Hill of Vision (1912)

  26. Reconfigured these thoughts on the constellation between the stuttering 'speckled, speckled speculation' of #CaptainBeefheart and the 'intermittent rhythm' of #Adorno's 'logic of disintegration' here. In #TroutMaskReplica as in #WalterBenjamin's #Trauerspiel, the 'exuberant subjection of antique elements... would, in destruction, still be superior to the harmonies of antiquity' (The Origin of German Tragic Drama 1998: 178-179).

  27. A sky speckled with stars, a grounding metaphor for Adorno's 'constellative thinking' (following Walter Benjamin), which focuses on fragmentary particulars - figuratively the scattered cosmic body of Adam Kadmon: 'Damadam to infinities!' (Finnegans Wake 18.30). Breaking the attunements of being, this thinking evokes the intermittent rhythm of Captain Beefheart's own 'speckled speculation' #TroutMaskReplica #Trauerspiel #DonVanVliet #CaptainBeefheart #JamesJoyce #Adorno #WalterBenjamin #kabbalah

  28. A calligraphic masterpiece, an 11-inch high piece of parchment that contains the entire biblical Song of Songs in Hebrew micrography (written in tiny letters). It is signed by the Lithuanian artist/scribe, Baruch ben Shemaryah, 1794. It renders the entire Song of Songs as a work of art, in letters that are at once text and illumination. Shir (song) is the central word around which the text revolves. - Yale University Judaica Collection campuspress.yale.edu/judaicaco #SongofSongs #micrography

  29. In 'One.Two.Three', Vincent Meessen revisits a neglected part of the history of the Situationist movement, prompted by the discovery, in the archives of the Belgian Situationist Raoul Vaneigem, of the lyrics to a protest song composed in May 1968 by Congolese Situationist Joseph Mbelolo Ya Mpiku. Working with Mbelolo and young musicians in Kinshasa, Vincent Meessen has produced a new rendition of the song. The 35 min film is part of this longer presentation. #Situationism
