tidymodels has long supported parallelizing model fits across CPU cores. A couple of the modeling engines that #rstats #tidymodels supports for gradient boosting—#XGBoost and #LightGBM—have their own tools to parallelize model fits. A new blog post explores whether tidymodels users should use tidymodels' implementation, the engines', or both.

Just found reviewer from @[email protected]: Human-scale LLM code review, as if a member of the tidyverse team were there with you to workshop your code for reproducibility, readability, and resilience. Note it's still very experimental. #Rstats github.com/simonpcouch/...

Who watches the watchmen? Oh wait, no one does – we did that last week, This week we compare LLMs to god level Owls, expose ourselves at the Church of Moltbot and watch BBC turn Britain off one channel at a time.
Listen to your host Ryan Alexander with Ian Forrester, David ‘Andy’ Eastman, and Wendy Grossman.

- Anthropic has invested 1.5M in the Python Software Foundation
- ChatGPT launching advertising in chatGPT products:
- the current actual costs in terms of electricity and water for LLM usage
- Voice cloning is now available to anyone with a GPU
- Clawdbot/Moltbot/OpenClaw
- A related dramatic reading

The #environmentalimpact of #AIcodingagents like #ClaudeCode is significantly higher than typical LLM queries. A single Claude Code session involves numerous tool calls and long prompts, leading to substantially more energy consumption. The author estimates the energy cost of a Claude Code session by analysing token usage and applying pricing data from Anthropic’s API. https://www.simonpcouch.com/blog/2026-01-20-cc-impact/?eicker.news #tech #media #news

🤖⚡️ Oh look, another riveting piece on how AI coding #agents are apparently guzzling #electricity like it's going out of style. 🌍💧 But fret not, your daily #chatbot #interactions are as impactful as a single drop in an ocean of irrelevance. 🙄💡

> So, if I wanted to analogize the energy usage of my use of coding agents, it’s something like running the dishwasher an extra time each day, keeping an extra refrigerator, or skipping one drive to the grocery store in favor of biking there. To me, this is very different than, in Benjamin Todd’s words, “a terrible reason to avoid” this level of AI use. These are the sorts of things that would make me think twice.

If you appreciated @allendowney's #positconf2024 keynote on the "there is only one test" idea, check out the infer #rstats package! The package was inspired by a blog post of Allen's years ago and implements 4 verbs encapsulating those core elements of randomization-based inference.

The talk recordings from #positconf2023 are now live on Youtube!
A highlight of the conference for me was from Nicole Jardine and Dan Snow from the Cook County Assessor's Office on using #rstats tidymodels to help allocate $16B in property taxes. It was amazing to get a peek into their model development process and learn about all of the factors they keep in mind along the way. (I do owe them a couple features in our packages.🙂)
