I implemented Ken Thompson’s Reflections on Trusting Trust (1984 Turing Award Lecture) compiler #backdoor for the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC). The backdoor maintains persistence by re-injecting itself to any new versions of the compiler built. The secondary payload modifies a test application by adding a backdoor password to allow authentication bypass:

$I spent most time (around two hours) writing the generalized tooling that produces the final quine version of the malicious payload. Now that this is done, the actual code can be adjusted trivially to exploit more target code without any need to adjust the self-reproducing section of the code. This method of exploitation could be extended to target various binaries: SSH Server, Linux Kernel, Setuid binaries and similar. While itself written in C, the secondary payloads can target any programming languages supported by GCC.
It should be noted that GCC build checks for malicious compiler changes such as this. This check can – of course – also be bypassed. However, most serious projects have measures in place to avoid hacks of this nature.

The new Ferris Wheel Press Kickstarter is live! I like the look of the pen, but I don't think I'll be picking it up. I love the engraving on the individual nib set, but I can't help feeling that they've really missed a trick by only having standard nib grinds. Considering their whole shtick is creativity it would have been nice to have some creative grinds, like a cursive italic, a fude, an architect, that kind of thing.

Le thème de cette usine, comme image idéalisée de la modernité et du progrès, est présent dans plusieurs des toiles de Sheeler. Si l’on en croit la présentation d’une exposition de 2003 : « ces œuvres témoignent clairement du caractère novateur de l'industrie américaine à cette époque, qui était en train de créer un paysage et une expérience radicalement nouveaux aux États-Unis. »
Des décennies plus tard, cette vision « propre sur elle » de l’industialisation et du « rêve américain », dans laquelle est notable l’absence totale de représentation de celles et ceux qui travaillaient dans cette usine, semble bien avoir perdu de sa superbe.
Le rêve industriel était bien un cauchemar, même peint avec de douces tonalités. Ce tableau, par ailleurs très beau, en est un pur témoignage.
