  1. We had a great time recceing the venue for our Euro-CSDMS workshop at Rydal Hall on Friday. It is a creativity inspiring space, which is just what we need for our workshop, when we will attempt to envision the future of environmental modelling.

More about the workshop, which is happening at the end of October*, can be found here: eurocsdmswork.shop

*October weather not guaranteed to be like this

  2. Excited to be able to share our latest paper, on the environmental risks of agrochemical inputs to oil palm plantations.

We show the potential for significant risks, notably from metals and pesticides, but highlight a need for more data for a more comprehensive assessment.

  7. Is Pixi + rattler-build* going to be the death of Poetry? In my limited experience so far, Pixi can do everything Poetry can do, just as easily, but has the added bonus of being language-agnostic and able to build Conda packages. Interested to hear thoughts!

*I think Prefix are working on integrating rattler-build into a `pixi build` command, and once this is finished, I don't see any advantage Poetry has over Pixi.

  8. Are you interested in developing the next generation of environmental models? Check out our Envision DTP #PhD opportunity! This exciting opportunity sits at the intersection of disciplines and will give you the opportunity to investigate how modern #softwarearchitecture practices can help us more rapidly respond to emerging chemical risks, such as #PFAS.

  9. Intentionally added #microplastics will be restricted within the EU in 20 days, with phased restrictions based on complexity to adapt. #Microbeads in cosmetics will be banned immediately, infill for sports pitches in 8 years, 4-12 years for other cosmetics.

  10. The new #EFSA tolerable daily intake for #BPA, updated in April 2023, is 20,000 times lower than the previous limit. It basically means that any intake, no matter how small, is considered a health risk. This amounts to a ban in all but name, but the key question is, what will replace it and is that any less toxic? One of the many factors at play in the complex global #plastic problem.

  11. #ALevelResults day: 16 years ago, I got a C in Maths and B in Physics (along with a B in Music and A in Environmental Science). Since then, I'd done a PhD in Quantum Physics and now write mathematical models for a living. A Levels are a really bad test of a very specific set of skills, so don't let setbacks put you off your passion!

  12. Thanks #SETACDublin for a stimulating and inspiring week of reconnecting with old colleagues, engaging with new ones, and learning a tonne of new stuff. Looking forward to Seville already!

  13. Kicking off #SETACDublin with an early morning run along the Liffey. Ready and excited for a week of all the latest science on environmental chemistry and toxicology!

  14. One week to go folks - get those abstracts in!! Microplastics, pharma, nano, PFAS, metals, mixtures, <insert your contaminant of interest here>... Release and exposure, process-based and data-driven... We're a broad church 🙂

(P.S. wishing there was a quote tweet option on Mastodon now 😉 )

  15. CW: Mentions the birdsite

My goal this week? To get myself Birdsite:Mastodon ratioed! As in, same (or similar) posts on both sites, but I get more engagement over here, which will be tricky 'cause I've got an order of magnitude less followers over here. This is the closest I've got so far! #TwitterMigration #AcademicMastadon #Macademia

  16. 🚨 Call for abstracts! 🚨 Do you have new and exciting research on chemical exposure, fate or release modelling that enables data-driven decision-making? You have until 30 November to submit to our session at #SETACDublin! #ScienceMastodon #SETAC
