  1. 📡 ESO has signed a contract with France's CNRS to develop a wideband intermediate frequency processor (WIFP) for ALMA. It will digitise the receiver signal from each of the 66 antennas at 40 billion samples per second — ten times today's rate. ESO says the throughput gain is like adding six antennas. Due mid-2028.

  2. 🌠 The September ε Perseids produced a short outburst on 10 Sep 2026: ZHR ~73 near 06:22 UT, with unusually bright meteors (population index r≈2.0 instead of 2.5). Visual counts were confirmed by radio data and the Global Meteor Network (CBET 5736, peak 06:33 UT). Amateur networks verifying a model prediction.

    I’m so excited to finally share my second PhD paper!

    About a year ago, I discovered something interesting in the closest and brightest millisecond pulsar (MSP) to Earth, PSR J0437-4715.

    It appeared there were not one, but two long-term profile change events occurring one after the other. These events are extremely rare in the MSP population. I reported on another one about a year ago.

    We used to think these objects were stable over the long term and ran our precision timing experiments on them. However, these new findings are now challenging that idea. New studies are emerging showing that many MSPs have variable profiles.

    The exciting thing is that we see only certain parts of the profile affected, along with the polarisations, confirming a magnetospheric origin. What is really fascinating is how similar both events are - it’s like the magnetosphere becomes disrupted but re-organises itself into its original configuration.
