  1. #AndyRourke was one of the best bass players of the 1980s IMHO. His playing was largely responsible for my getting into #TheSmiths. A very sad day, but an amazing legacy. RIP.

  2. I think that’s every key working now. It’s a bit janky, but way, way better. I’ve also replaced the RAM (it only had 16k, and two chips of that were bad). Now has the full 48k. It seems to be working and I can even get it to boot off a disc (not pictured). It is certainly getting there! I’ve got to learn how to use it now!

  3. Here’s a pic of the Apple II Europlus mainboard. I was surprised how good a picture I could get with an iPhone and a little perspective correction on my iPad. It is very usable at full res.

Other than the RAM (on order) I can’t see anything obviously wrong or missing here. My gut feeling is the board mainly works as it does get to a prompt and beeps. No sign of any rework on the rear either.

  4. So, I now have an Apple II Europlus. My next stage is learning how to fix an Apple II Europlus. It boots, beeps and displays a prompt, but the keyboard is dead aside from ctrl-reset. No other keys work. It is also only fitted with 16k RAM (previous owners fault-finding). More RAM ordered. I suspect it is the keyboard controller at fault. With the disc card and drive connected it does spin the drive and the heads seek. I think it wants to live!

  5. Quick plug for Necroware’s superb open source PC gameport to USB adapter. I built one a couple of weeks ago and have been playing Descent in DOSBox on my MacBook ever since! Much as I’d like a proper old retro PC I have nowhere left to set one up, so this is a great compromise as it enables the use of proper retro control hardware (the IBM Model M, which I’ve had for decades, has a USB to SDL adapter).
