Have been listening to #AndySerkis' audio book reading of #TheLordOfTheRings which is apparently #free on archive.org. His performance is spirited, though a little uneven in spots, and his singing is just fair. His voicing choices sound inspired by the actors in the Peter Jackson films (AS mimics Sean Bean's #Boromir, Sir Ian McKellen's #Gandalf, etc.). It is also a little odd overall since it is a bit like #Gollum reading #JRRTolkien's translation of The Red Book of Westmarch to me. Overall though, nicely done. I have been having Secure Shell hangs when sending/receiving bulk data (large packets) between my workstation and a WAN server. I think I've discovered bad behavior somewhere in the WAN.
I figured it out by pinging the remote host using different sized packets with the Do Not Fragment bit set. Above a certain size, one is supposed to go from receiving ping responses to getting back ICMP error packets indicating the packet was too large and that fragmentation is needed, along with the MTU size to use. This called Path MTU Discovery.
Instead of that I get three behaviors: ping response for small packets, silence for midsized packets (bad!), and error response for too-large packets.
This is really bad news, and it seems TCP just stops working if it can't get those too-large packets through.
Anyway, the WAN provider apparently autonomously rebooted their equipment, and the problem is now gone, but it has been dogging me intermittently the last several months. It's a real pain when ssh craps out when cat'ing a long file or git fetch sessions hang.
I now have the start of a tool that I can use to monitor that bad behavior is happening, though.

I made the mistake of reading people's comments to video footage from yesterday's #Starship #IFT4 flight, and want to comment on that annoying noise that is not helpful:
1) self-proclaimed rocket scientists designing component changes.
2) abject failure deciders.
3) politics ad hominem attackers ascribing commenter beliefs to some projected spot on the liberal/conservative, commie/MAGA, or socialist/oligarchist spectra.
4) equation of #SpaceX success/failure with its rich employee/owner.1/14

My gamma spectrometer arrived yesterday. Unsurprisingly but thrilling, the smoke detector has Americium-241, which falls off to background levels (160 CPM) a half a meter away. Nothing else has shown gamma activity. I have some small element samples on order that should be interesting. I am curious whether it's worth it looking for thrift shop finds (uranium ceramics, radium watches) or if they are all routinely screened these days. #science #radioactivity #gamma #americium #uranium #RadiaCode

My fun Saturday started with feeding cats, making waffles, assembling a new gas BBQ, @drememynd and I meandering through the booths at the Pride Festival chatting with folks, then meeting my nephew for Mexican style lager and excellent food, and a quiet evening reading up on various Tolkien topics with our various cats.

@KarchWrites A lot of overlap here so I'm game for a follow. I used to think I was #ENFP but the last several years suggest I am #INFP and want to like people but my patience is thinner. Board games: current favorites include Betrayal at the House on the Hill and Healthy Heart Hospital. Sagrada is the new game and we are liking that. Pandemic is an old favorite.
