Second World War Pett Level coastal battery, an emergency battery built as part of Eastern Command's coastal defences. The battery was constructed in 1940-41 and mounted two 6-inch breech-loading guns.
The land is managed by the Pett Level Preservation Trust, and the battery wall now has a bat box attached.

Thanks to that very noticeable epigyne, I am now confident it's a girl. Which means she could last 20 years or more! Am now very much aware that many of my spiders may outlive me. 😱

Thanks to that very noticeable epigyne, I am now confident it's a girl. Which means she could last 20 years or more! Am now very much aware that many of my spiders may outlive me. 😱

Autumn is coming to Sussex at last. Is it me, or are the trees late to start changing colour this year? This was two weeks ago
This is Flatropers Wood, where @sussexwildlifetrust are currently working hard restoring a pond underneath the run of pylons; no aerial view is possible sadly, as not safe to fly in their vicinity.

CW - Spider.
This young lady is a Poecilotheria ornata juvenile, sitting at the entrance to her corkbark tube hide (in the wild she would be inside a tree or hidden under loose bark) waiting for prey.
Note the yellow under her front legs, used for threat display - legs raised, fangs exposed to say "Back off as I'm extremely venomous"
