  1. #easyeffects #linux #linuxaudio do you think you could have a volume slider or some mechanism when switching output interfaces to protect against instant 100% full volume headphones?

RIP my ears figuring out how to switch audio output.

At least with #pulseaudio or #pavucontrol there's a slider right there and you can quickly turn it down if you are fast enough instead of ripping them off your face.

Im fortunate enough to have had the open back kind, I can imagine closed would be even more crazy. Que Darth Vader from Back to the Future.

  2. @purism I happened to be reading the blog and this is the exact #linux #hacker #modder kind of thing I love.

The prospect of 3d printing a back plate with VESA mount means that this size or style device could theoretically be used as add-on displays and double as a grab and go device. I saw someone on #fedi working on the software for such a concept not long ago and even the #valve #steamdeck oled model linked up the decks in a similar way as demonstrated in their killer trailer

    yewtu.be/watch?v=_vTsZMvjJ-A

I do love the sleek aluminum style and premium feel of the #librem11 but I also feel like this kind of 3d mod is catnip to the Linux community.

In unrelated news I would love to 3d print a Librem 5 back plate or make one out of copper someday, its half pipe dream but if the STL files ever are released with the needed nub clip details I could see those being techie catnip in a sense too. So cool to see mods 😄👍

  3. I wish that file managers like #dolphin and #nautilus would thumbnail files based on their File Unique ID and not path, I have 150GB on 650 files from my photo shoot and the thumbnail generation takes a lot of resources where the thumbnail is thrown out when I rename the directory, or move the file into a sub-directory which can take 10 minuets just to create thubmbnails.

Also, when someone makes a #systemd #kio thumbnailer to automatically thumbnail paths let me know as it would really speed up my workflow to have the thumbnails ready to go when I enter the directory.

  4. #librem11 back camera 5mp test photo of a #sliger computer case shot indoor, at night with moderate to low lighting conditions (4/4) #purism #linuxmobile

  5. The #librem11 is great so far, I've been giving #pureos a shot since it is #purism flagship distro -- there are things that I think need improvement -- like (a) some of the pureos apps are not as good as their #flatpak counterparts -- like for example flathub has #geany 2.0 while pureos is still 1.38 0 -- or (b) the native `gnome-calculator` app for some reason doesn't respect "Dark Theme" mode in #phosh -- same with #gedit -- the flatpak version needs to be installed by console (same with #epiphany).

    I'm writing this from #tuba and i much prefer it to android #fediverse apps. #parabolic #xournal++ #gnome-maps #libreoffice #krita #gimp #discord #gimp #krita #mypaint all seem to be working just fine.

Having had no prior experience with #tablet sized devices with a keyboard, it wasn't obvious to me how the magnetic cover snaps to the back of the tablet in a λ kind of shape.

Contact sync with #nextcloud works as expected, and #geary email seems like a good fit for this size device, though I typically prefer #thunderbird -- I'm going to give that a try later.

#chatty seems clogged up when I try to login to my #matrix -- though I had a lot of rooms and person to person chats. I am thinking of installing the #flatpak version to see if that fixes it, but then that would seem odd to not use pureos version. It sometimes shows my rooms and contacts double in the left sidebar. Though I have been impressed when using my #librem5 and #postmarketos version of the app as I am new to it. It's a bit rough but seems to have come a long way.

Overall the device is pretty snappy, I have 6 apps open as I write this and it is doing just fine.

#cheese takes photos and videos just fine. I tried to get the #gnome "snapshot" "camera" app running but it doesn't automatically detect the cameras. I am not sure if this is because it is a flatpak or not. I enabled the permissions in #flatseal

I strongly recommend a wireless bluetooth mouse. I am using a inexpensive logitech m535 and it works great. Wifi, no complaints there.

I do think that the default apps in the pureos repos should either be updated or omitted as the default software source, suchas the #libreoffice package when intalled has a theme that makes it look like it's from the 1990s whereas the flatpak version is very nice.

I've been watching #linuxmobile over the last decade and I am presently surprised how far purism and the #linux and #foss people have come. Excellent work @ all. I think this is a great device to do development on as it runs much faster than my #pinephone and even my librem5. And it's not qemu, and the device seems easy enough to reflash -- one thing I especially like about the librem5 aswell when compared to other processes like fumbling through pmbootstrap to reflash #android to #lineageos
I am still trying to figure out what the best music app for this device is -- I do like #lollypop

Internal sound quality isn't amazing, but I wouldn't call it bad either when comparing to some of the other small form factor devices with mobile speakers I've owned. It's fine as a fallback but you are better off with a bluetooth headset to complement it or a tiny portable bluetooth speaker.

Some options like "scale apps to fullscreen" are not easy to find so I had to set a few options in dconf-editor. I think there is a app called "Mobile Settings" that might have it. Not all apps have the dialogs constrained inside the screen dimensions like the Geany Open dialog for example (which is understandable as this app hasn't targeted mobile or tablet yet as far as I know.)

I use the device to watch online videos, for instant messaging via matrix via #element / #schildichat and it does just fine. I haven't tested it with #zoom or anything but from what I've seen I'm sure it'd do just fine.

Epiphany "Install Website as App" is a great feature -- I have several I've added to my App Menu, Epiphany has always had trouble though being on the lean side. I do wish that I had this option on #firefox ESR, in any case I've just switched to #librewolf again as I prefer it.

I am interesting in comparing phosh to #gnomemobile as I might want to use that instead someday. I have used #plasmamobile and it's hard to put into words in some ways I like it more than phosh, and in other ways I am just not used to the apps -- some apps are just better out of box like their notes app, I like that they have a flashlight button in their top menu. Their UX scaling and fluidity is really good. I am glad that everything is doing such a good job and friendly competition will drive each side to keep improving.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this device on day 1, but I am glad I did. And as I don't have a laptop or like laptops or conventional smartphones very much for me this device is kindof a big deal that I can do basic #linux and #it things on the go along with communication and such without all the headache of android, ios or windows which is not a option for me as linux is just better.

If you think about the #privacy space -- the #libremboot #codeboot is pretty revolutionary to start to see these kinds of firmwares in all in one hardware. And of course this automatic disk encryption is a nice bonus though not something I need as a enthusiast unless maybe I want to travel with the device and protect my data.

People will have different criticisms, and opinions, and I may be easy-going but overall my opinion is that I am pleased with the utility the device offers and I think any rough edges will only get better in the software over time. I may switch the default distro eventually to do some more research and exploring in the linux mobile space -- but it's a little unclear who the big names are worth checking out. I did postmarketos for a while but I feel like the QA is a little all over the place and their package manager is a little difficult to use when I want to check the available software versions, and the phone space is such a mess to try to document and navigate if you are trying to use a previously android device.

I'm also interested in how the #starlabs #starlite5 will compare and contrast in the future. Having used this device I can't recommend something in this size without a keyboard and mouse for more complex usage, I didn't really undestand that the Librem11 keyboard is wired at first, but now that I have figured it out I prefer the simple tech vs overcomplication.

All in all, I think they have a winner, and I expect to get a lot of use out of this as a side rig to my main desktop. Would buy again, and excited to see all the software improvements coming downstream.

  6. It feels really weird using environment variables that are not even 1 day old yet.

    #eza #bash #zsh

Sometimes it's easy to forget how much the #linux #foss #opensource community innovates so quickly and it really is person to person where things get done.

  7. @purism #puri #librem5 last poke for the night, if you want to release the STL file for the back of the Librem 5 I would love to 3d print a new back cover or have one made out of solid copper or aluminum.

The plasticy feel of the back doesn't have the expensive premium feel you would expect from the device like the sleek aluminum feel of the side frame.

I would hapilly order a clear case jacket for it too however so far I haven't been impressed with them in the #linuxmobile space -- the #pinephone outer shell case for example felt pretty terrible and below average.

I do think releasing the STL or cad files would encourage the #3dprinting community to "make the device their own" and maybe do custom color backplates which encourages the development of brand culture and loyal fanbase.

Currently I'm running "20221123-0638-postmarketOS-v22.06-phosh-18-purism-librem5-installer.img.xz" -- "megapixels-purism" wasn't working and other than that I'm systematically going through packages to see what is available and working

When using a USB Dock and mouse opening apps and getting around is surprisingly quick.

I'm building a list of my favorite packages so I can pmbootatrap my own install image if possible eventually.

So far I much prefer #postmarketos to #pureos -- I am looking forward to trying #gnome for #librem5 #linuxphone too.

Some apps are broken like Gnome Maps, Pure Maps, Gnome Weather and a few "out of bounds" for the screen size in portrait mode. I am not sure if postmarketos needs to update them or what.

#lollypop for music works great. #portfolioand #nautilus for file browsing have improved since I tried them on #pinephone. #giara isn't yet working maybe I need a new version. Also ive yet to setup #tootle. #geary is bitter sweet, it is adequate for email but was hard to setup until I used a mouse. I love #gnomecalculator and #gedit for mobile has grown on me.

I was having trouble setting up #nextcloud -client but maybe when I try again it will work. #nextcloud in #gnomesettings worked fine and populated my contacts just fine.

I wasn't able to get Gnome Calendar working. #firefox -esr worked better than #epiphany but I need epiphany for webapps on the app screen for sites like windy.com and https://web.pulse point.org

    I'm using #starship console just fine. #pavucontrol

#gnomeclocks is great! #pidgin not so much #rhythmbox not so much as it goes out of bounds.

I've also still yet to find a good video player, a equiv for youtube/newpipe and I have to give gnome-sound-recorder another try for audio note taking.

All in all it has come a long way from my initial research via PinePhone PMOS.

I love that there are also terminal apps like #bashtop too -- I wouldn't even mind having some .desktop launchers in the App Menu to load full screen versions of those and #htop -- certainly there's room for #neofetch ricers to make some cool #unixporn rices -- its going to be an interesting year for the linux phone space for sure -- so glad I finally have a #librem5 to poke around and do some research.

The big setback for me right now is figuring out a good #element client for #matrix -- I tried #neochat but it isn't fetching decryption keys -- #fractal froze -- I have to spend more time poking around.

And then of course as indicated by #purism "most wanted apps" on their website a #signal app of some sort or android version of it on the phone would be really important as SMS and MMS are not really reliable or robust.

More poking to do, thanks for the info about 22.12 -- installing pmos with the wiki was fairly straight foreward, slightly rough around the edges but not even close to hard mode in the #linux world.

  12. One thing that I think we've lost over the last 20 years is "audio cues" #linux #foss #kde #gnome #opensource -- the desktop used to give a lot more audio feedback as to the events & status of events.

Empty the recycle bin? It had s simple audio cue play

Copy a folder? You have a audio cue to communicate success.

New email? Cue AOL charming & cringy "You've got mail.wav"

OS Startup? You feel like you are getting excited to get something done withe Windows XP - 7 and early 2000s Ubuntu startup sounds.

I think this principle could be taken so much farther -- perform a #rsync Why not have a audio cue for both Success.ogg and Failure.ogg -- or what about #polkit password verification, you are multi tasking on the phone or doing something in your office -- having a cue to redirect your attention to that you need to enter a password would be helpful.

Same thing goes for #pacman #yay and #paru in #archlinux

There are times you are compiling a program and it needs extra privileges to install but you don't notice it -- it would make a huge difference if we had a hook system and could Enable/Disable audio cues & notifications -- that would be a huge improvement.

I could really see this also bringing a lot of value in #linuxphone space, with #ubuntutouch #postmarketos #sxmo and others.

Its really hard to know what your missing when its been so long since you had it.

Plug in a USB Flash Drive? Audio Cue

Connect / Disconnect your phone to your computer? Audio Cue

Remote SSH Connection logs into your machine? Notification & Audio Cue.

With the right sound packs there is so much room for improvement -- #steamdeck #steamos v3 does a good job with this too giving subtle cues as you navigate the UX, startup, shutdown, etc...

  13. @jgoerzen Sounds like #httrack but a little better, although in my experience html sites are a PITA -- It would be nice if it was literally a .tar archive containing the website & files like how many file formats are archives in disguise.
