On the article above, you mentioned WordPress plugin. I find it very interesting.

WordPress plugin like Advanced Custom Fields, WooCommerce, Gravity Forms, they are (except Gravity Forms):
    1. Releasing their 'open source' products free of charge.
    2. Selling their premium 'open source' products for a price (which is a good thing, I am not against money making).

    Now, let we see:
    1. Do they develop their premium 'open source' products in public repository where people can read the code and contributing?

They don't. This defeat the purpose of open source software development methodology.

    2. Do they welcome to the idea that other people can read, study, modify and redistribute their premium 'open source' plugin?

No, they are strongly against this, especially the redistribution.

    ----------------------

Even thought their plugins are under GPL license and they call themselves as open source developers, but, open core is what they have been practically doing.

This is one of the things which gave me the idea that open core is the open source next direction.

no one should depend on the whims of any corporation for essential needs or survival

use free, open-source systems #FOSS supported by responsive and responsible non-profit entities
. or learn to support yourself by becoming technically proficient

all corporations are political entities that put their profits and their power ahead of your survival every. single. time.

Free software movement focuses on freedom, but not friendly to the commercial world.

Open source movement emerged from free software movement. It replaced freedom with software development methodology. It is absolutely friendly to the commercial world.

Open core is the natural next direction of open source. It is friendly to the commercial world, but it is also friendly to the pocket of the developers.

Next, returning to 100% proprietary software as a way of life.

Edit: I am not against proprietary software. I am using Excel daily.

so crazy to come up with such an idea

there is a need for an open minded global internet for the world

an internet that actually brings people to a higher level

not to the level of some arab jewish russian american european chinese animals like trump netanyahu putin to name a few

    #mindset #internet

I'm glad to see you partnering with other European companies.

I just wish that #Ecosia hadn't gone on to go so deep into #AI with their services. And I don't see a way to cut it out completely like there is on #DuckDuckGo.

I am glad that you've taken a stand against it.

  7. Interesting interview with @jospoortvliet from @nextcloud on #Nextcloud and European #sovereignity , on (dutch) Tweakers.net.
Bonus points for Jos to continue the interview in the comment section under the interview.

    My takes:
    - Nextcloud has a tiny team w.r.t. for example Microsoft.
    - If you can change for 80% of your users, that is a big step forward w.r.t. waiting for the perfect solution to be available. Definitely when M365 suddenly is 100% unavailable due to whatever reason.
    - If you do (partially) switch to Nextcloud, that's also a big revenue increase for Europe.
    - They already roll out 100.000 desktops a month.
    - No, it is not 1:1 identical. But, neither are your shoes when you buy new ones. Some parts will be different.

  14. Good luck @weblate ... While @nextcloud talks about FOSS and decentralization, people have been asking them for years about using #Peertube and #Weblate, but it's always crickets and continued exclusive use of #YouTube and #Transifex.

There's virtually never even a response why they exclusively use the closed, #centralized, #proprietary services.

I respect @Karlitschek and @jospoortvliet but the org seems only interested in #FOSS / #Privacy / #decentralization in their own code / marketing.

  15. @nextcloud We’re ready to help you with , and growing your localization community. That’s what we do, with care. We have experience and use cases with numerous migrations from TF to . Many of translators use Weblate with other projects already. You’re welcome 😉

Do you know which sticker was the most popular with Nextcloud users this ? @Karlitschek also liked them, and @jospoortvliet took many of them 😃 cc @jibec @ButterflyOfFire @rakekniven

It was triggered by the Norwegian Consumer Council - but of course, we see many consumer organizations say the same.

  20. RE: burningboard.net/@alison/11660

Can confirm what Alison says - there is stuff happening at grassroots that eclipses what, say, the commission does in many ways.

At the same time, this requires brave people who care. And to make the rest move - hard rules will be needed. Hopefully the EU will thus continue on its slow and steady path to get some decent regulations around in place!

Oh and we promoted DIDAY last week at the Republica event - sharing stickers in various places ;-)
