I've been working with VMware for much of the past 20 years, and with Broadcom now...meeeeh. If anything good has come of this situation, I'm forcing myself for the first time to explore XCP-NG, Proxmox, and Xen and KVM in general more seriously. So far I'm really impressed with what XCP-NG has become, and Xen Orchestrator seems to be heading in the right direction.
So, any Fosstodon-ers out there have thoughts and experience on Vates and XCP-NG in general? #vmware #virtualization #xcp-ng

I know #AltSpace meant a lot to those who were active there over the years, so it's sad to see it go. I only visited every so often for fun and exploration, and occasionally for professional "meetups" but it was a solid virtual space option.
If something like this can't survive "the Metaverse" I think we're going to be hard pressed to see another version broadly accepted any time soon.

4. Also, these particular clumpy boots are godawful - like some combo of motorcycle and snow boots. What were they thinking?
5. In conclusion, it is incumbent upon all people of taste to counter the influence of the #bigclumpyboot lobby on K-pop. -
VIVIZ -- Cliché
https://youtu.be/1UVuxCDPr1s?si=C_-L7fIMXYzfefjWAlthough I haven't posted this fancam before, I'm aware that I have posted a number of iterations of "Cliché" previously - so many, that perhaps some will be inclined to think I am posting to live up to the song's title.
So why this post now?
-- I love the song, and I can't stop celebrating it.
-- The song was part of the set for the 260315 Sakura Festival in Kaohsiung , but the outfits and staging were low budget. This Taiwan stage is the '"real thing".
-- Some Kpop fans here might think I am a dogmatic hater of rapping. This is not the case. I think of rap in Kpop as being like a spice; a little of it, as here from SinB and Umji, makes the dish so tasty, but I cannot stomach a whole bowl of it.
-- All three members look beautiful here, but my bias Eunha is so gorgeous that the fancam MUST be posted.
-- VIVIZ are in a contract crisis at the moment, and part of me - the romantic @jemmesedi, as opposed to the scientific realist @jemmesedi - believes that this posting will somehow help the members in their distress. I know this is magical thinking, but...
"Thank you for your attention to this matter".

After going back and forth about how big or small my #BestOfKpop2025 list should be, I decided to revert to my original plan and just post my Song Of The Year.
As you can see from the linked post that I wrote in June, I love "The Chase" so much , and I never tire of watching this stage.
Sparkle sparkle!

I got hold of a copy of "The Vegetarian" and finished it this afternoon.
On one level, this novel - or is it a trilogy of linked novellas? - is a critique in fiction of the repression of women in socially conservative South Korea.
Yet "The Vegetarian" is much more than that, questioning as it does our distinctions between sanity and madness, care and cruelty, and humanity and nature.
More disturbing for me than all the body horror aspects of the book was the suggestion that a supreme moment of creative expression might be inextricably bound up with cruelty, exploitation, and betrayal.
At just under two hundred pages, this is not a long read. Thanks to @isa for your recommendation!

I don't want to flood your inbox, but I did want to thank you again for the Barbara Kingsolver recommendation.
I have just finished "The Bean Trees", which made a delightfully refreshing contrast to the last novel by a US author I read, Elmore Leonard's "Out of Sight"; see my comments on Leonard here: https://c.im/@jemmesedi/115323499218156545
Even though "The Bean Trees" was published 37 years ago in 1988 -- the year that Trump really started Trumping -- I was pleasantly reminded as I read it of how the USA is so much more than the simplistic caricature of a country presented by MAGA. The book conveys a vivid sense of various US places - Kentucky, Oklahoma, Arizona -- and the diversity of these places' inhabitants. I also found it refreshing to read a novel steeped in progressive values that was without a trace of the graduate seminar room or East/West coast hipsterism. I liked the way that Kingsolver incorporated surprises in the narrative and humour too; I laughed out loud at times. All in all, an enjoyable but also thought provoking read.
I think I'm going to put "The Poisonwood Bible" on my TBR list.
Thanks again - should I be thanking Dawn too?

STAYC - BEBE | SBS 250406
https://youtu.be/JJY0SKwiB4M?si=RqiPknFZaTlAKWt5This popped up in my YouTube recommendations and it reminded me of you.
I really like these outfits, but I doubt that the they will have anything like this on their tour. My guess is that they will do with outfits as they have done in Australia.
I don't know if outfits matter to you; they do to me, so I was a little disappointed that the VIVIZ North American tour has not included an outfit change during the concert.
On the other hand, that decision has made it easier for me to review the outfits they did wear: https://c.im/@jemmesedi/115249872128586180
What have been some of your favourite STAYC outfits?

In connection with the post I have just made, https://c.im/@jemmesedi/115012825619331824, I note that there are many aspects of the disappearing DEI culture which I will not miss.
These include shadow history and sociology teaching by student life departments, mandatory reading of Robin DiAngelo, and the use of overexpansive definitions of "harm" and "violence" to police speech on campus.
Yet however headline catching these and similar follies have been, they should not distract our attention from the real target of the assault on DEI, the progress made by Black Americans since the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
With regard to higher education, Trump and the Claremont Right want to roll back anything other than vestigial gains, by effectively excluding Black Americans from the most prestigious colleges and universities and shunting them off instead into what is little more than a glorified vo-tech track.
In a updated re-enactment of the Du Bois / Booker T Washington debate, the White right will find some allies amongst those Black conservatives who will welcome a return to "business" and "entrepreneurship".
I believe that this push by the right is an ugly attempt to deprive Black Americans of their fair share of the security, wealth, and honor conferred by graduation from prestigious institutes of higher education.
Progressives should oppose this rollback. Rather than lamenting the end of "diversity", we should be thinking of how best to remedy the injustices consequent on the subjugation of African Americans.
Affirmative action for African Americans in higher education is one measure that almost certainly must play a part in this remedy. It might be unpopular, it might have to to be narrowed, its legal and political justification will certainly have to be rethought, but it cannot be abandoned as we think about an America after Trump.

VIVIZ -- Eunha
Eunha looks so beautiful here.
I can't remember when this photo was taken, but I am struck by the similarity of the hat here to that worn by SinB on The Show earlier this week: https://c.im/@jemmesedi/114864518836143184
It's a good look on both of them.

[Full Album] ARTMS 'Club Icarus' Music Visual
https://youtu.be/VQYiQQPMTSU?si=YJ4Ci-EKIcZAMhStSimilarly to the DALL music visual last year,* this fifteen minute video allows you to enjoy the "Club Icarus" album with the members.
I like the title track a lot. Of the others, "Obsessed" is my favourite.
Although this album isn't quite as good as DALL, it nevertheless continues that wonderful progression from the Jaden Jeong/LOONA sound.

Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Fifty Fifty – Midnight Special.
Earlier this week I posted about Fifty Fifty – Midnight Special, linking to the MV:
https://c.im/@jemmesedi/114503890533182088
!
Not that long afterwards, I was thrilled to see this performance video.
Both the beat and the vocals appeal to me, and watching beautiful idols dressed in black dance to a song I like delights me. But wait (do they still have infomercials with these lines?), there’s more!Who needs stage names when you have birth names like...
