  1. I use #sqlx, and I wanted syntax highlighting for embedded #SQL queries in my #Rust code. Making that work in #Neovim led me to learning a few things about #Treesitter, and #NixOS packaging conventions. Here's my write-up!

  10. My parents live in a #rural area where they depend on satellite internet. They're doing their part to #resist by cancelling their Starlink account, and switching to another service that is higher latency, but is cheaper. #TogetherWeStand #UnplugStarlink

  11. Have people here seen #Garnix? On top of CI and #Nix caching they do automatic service deployments based on #NixOS configs. They have an interesting take on zero-downtime deployments that takes advantage of Nix' everything-is-hashed system to get a process that is more efficient than rolling or blue-green deployments. #devops

  12. I had a great paddle on the mouth of the #RussianRiver on a foggy day this weekend. It was much warmer than it looks! Several harbor seals poked their heads up to give me a looking-over. Or maybe the same seal several times? I did my best to keep my distance, but they popped up all over the deeper parts of the river.

I promise I didn't prop that board on its fin! It's leaning on a conveniently-placed mound of sand.

  13. CW: Software developer tooling with Nix

#Cachix recently announced devenv.sh, #Nix-based tooling for "Fast, Declarative, Reproducible, and Composable Developer Environments".

I'm hyped about Nix for exactly this use case - I'm glad to see a company putting resources into this idea. I much prefer Nix to #Docker for dev environments because Nix doesn't need a container or VM.

  17. Extreme #wealthinequality is *not* an inevitable outcome of capitalism. In "Wealth of Nations" Adam Smith argued that the rate of profit is, "always highest in the countries which are going fastest to ruin." In a fair economy competition will emerge to undercut the wealthiest individuals & corporations. The fact that US profits are so high is a sign that our economy is not fair or healthy.

  20. Just 10 people spent a combined $540 million on tomorrow's #election. That's spending we know about without the benefit of the #DISCLOSE Act which would have targeted, among other things, contributions from foreign oligarchs. This is way too much influence for a handful of people to wield over our politicians.

  23. Can you imagine a world without Rupert Murdoch? The man has put massive resources for decades into manufacturing a culture war in several of the largest English-speaking countries. The scale of damage done for one man's personal enrichment is atrocious. #nogoodbillionaires
