  1. Last night's 'it's 1am and I can't sleep' watch was 'Send Help', which I overall enjoyed, even if it didn't go as hard and over-the-top as I had hoped. But regardless, it's good seeing Sam Raimi back to his horror element after 17 whole years.

  11. Got to check out an advance review copy of The Marvel Creator Collection No. 1 "Back to the Savage Land" Barry Windsor-Smith at Marvel Vol. 1, which collects several of his silver age, pre-Conan works for Marvel, including Ka-Zar in Astonishing Tales, and his takes on The Avengers, The Uncanny X-Men, and Iron Man.

A great read showcasing Windsor-Smith's style evolving from his clear Jack Kirby influences and forming an identity of its own. It's intriguing revisiting those stories and seeing how much these stories and characters have grown through the decades.

  12. @fringemagnet

One of those films I'll watch whenever it's on.

PS it would have been a *really* bad idea for Keanu to have attempted a cockney accent given that #JohnConstantine's a scouser.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scouse

(IIRC Matt Ryan did go for a mild Liverpool accent in his Arrowverse appearances.)

  13. Just finished reading an advance review copy of 'On the Set of Forrest Gump', written by producer Steve Starkey and forwarded by Tom Hanks. The book explores the movie mostly from a filmmaking angle, going behind-the-scenes on the creative process, the practical and visual effects that made certain scenes possible, and discussing the intentional changes they made from Winston Groom's 1986 novel.

The book is coming out March 17, 2026. Full thoughts here:

  14. Been really curious about "Snow Bear" ever since I caught a glimpse of it several months ago. It's an 11-minute animated short, that is basically the independent passion project of former Disney animator Aaron Blaise, and I'm really glad that I got the chance to finally watch it as it's now officially released for free on YouTube after several limited film festival screenings.

The film is entirely hand-drawn in old school style 2D animation, and tells the story of a lonely polar bear who creates a companion out of snow so he has someone like himself to spend time with. It's a tender story with a clear message about climate change, its effect on different species, and the effort that needs to be made in order to prevent the worse. It's also a moving story about loneliness and hope, that ends with an optimistic note, staying true to its "you don't have to be alone" tagline.

  19. I belong to the generation of kids who, at some point growing up, caught the first series of 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' on TV in all its campy glory. Back when it started as an adaptation of the Japanese 'Super Sentai' show, that also utilised a significant amount of footage from the original. Because of that, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for any material involving the OG team, and Kimberly and Trini in particular, them being the original two female rangers to appear on the show.

Reading "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Pink Ranger" I can say that it certainly lived up to my nostalgic expectations. The book follows a grownup Kimberly, and includes "The Return", a Power Rangers story co-written by Amy Jo Johnson herself and Matt Hotson, that stands out for its mature themes and the touching way it pays tribute to Jason David Frank and Thuy Trang.

The book is coming out January 13, 2026.

  21. I have a big soft spot in my heart for anything related to the 'Peanuts' comic strip, and for Charles M. Schulz as a creator, so I was happy I got a chance to read "Manga Biographies: Charles M. Schulz - The Creator of Snoopy and Peanuts" by Yuzuru Kuki, and ended up finishing it in a single afternoon. The book starts with a little introductory info on Schulz and the 'Peanuts' characters before beginning to tell his story as a shy, socially anxious kid who grew up loving reading and drawing comics, and who also had a special bond with his childhood dog Spike.

It pretty much covers Schulz's entire life, from his early childhood experiences and him serving in WWII, to achieving his dream of becoming a cartoonist, his work process, his inspirations, his divorce, how he found love again at 50, and his special connection with his fans. There's also lots of interesting, and often touching, trivia included, like Snoopy and Charlie Brown's historical ties to the Apollo 11 moon landing, and the fact that 'Snoopy' is the name that his mum suggested they give their next dog, before she died.

Big thank you to UDON Entertainment for giving me a review copy.

  26. That's all 4 seasons of 'Resident Alien' watched. It's a fun, silly little sci-fi comedy with some really heartwarming hopepunk elements and a focus on found family and human connection. Sad it got cancelled, but glad it had the chance to have a proper conclusion and a bittersweet ending that wraps the story of all main characters.

  27. Today marks 75 years since the publication of the first 'Peanuts' comic strip back in October of 1950. And decades later, the stories of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the rest of the gang remain as relatable and as popular as ever, because beyond the surface, there is a characteristic sincerity in Charles M. Schulz's work that makes those comics way more than the cute little stories of a boy, his dog, and his friends.

The Peanuts comic strips manage to combine humour and melancholy, often striking a balance between the whimsical and the philosophical, speaking about sadness and optimism, without ever getting overly heavy or preachy.
