This is inspired by @freeder23. As I am preparing for a trip to hike the Fish River Canyon in Namibia in May of this year, why not post a series about #whatsinyourpack about I am packing personally and some things that will be shared in our group.
The FRC is desert-style hiking, with the biggest challenges are water-management & temperature extremes.
Starting off, I am taking my Osprey LT Atmos 65 as the pack itself. This is non an ultralight - it weighs 1300g. However it is pretty resistant to abuse, and has multiple packing options. It is not as versatile as the Kestrel series from Osprey, but it is lighter.
Depending on the weather forecast closer to the time, I might forego taking the built-in rain cover.
As usual, I'll try to fit everything inside, but I might carry a mug and some soluble energy tablets on one of the stretch side pockets.

The call of nature...
The FRC is a delicate ecosystem. We want to leave as little behind as we can. This inspired us to take a CuloClean this time. ( @freeder23 has one in his lic the other day too - https://mas.to/@freeder23/112021670373932860).
Also taking the Deuce trowel along.
Not sure about the hand sanitizer though. Wet wipes might be lighter, but needs to be carried out. WDYT?
Everything goes in this waterproof multi-compartment Culo bag. It has a small bag for carrying out your dirty paper.

Lots of birds on the beach. We watched the pelicans dive into the water all day. They would never do it when I had my camera out though.

#falsespring is over! Back to #winter at least for a couple days.

@Jennifer very light weight compared to the bear canister. Not as bear proof and you have to hang it every night. The whole bear bag set up only weighs 3.4 ounces though. #prosandcons

Success! My first very short hike since beginning rehab on my feet. I hiked just under a mile in the nature preserve across the street from my house. It was a good test run. The mud and roots on this path usually make my Peroneal Tendinitis flare up but not today. I felt NO PAIN!!!
My Achilles Tendinitis is 95% healed as well.
-
Still no hiking but my Peroneal tendinitis and Achilles tendonitis is doing much, much better. Rest, ice, stretching, and better shoes is helping so far. Now I'm doing some exercises to strengthen the muscles and tendons (balancing on one leg and resistance bands).
I did so much with bad shoes and bad feet last year. I'm looking forward to what I will be able to do this year!

At one of my happy places yesterday, Tappers Arcade Bar in Indy. The arcades are free to play. You do have to pay for pinball though.
My wife and I fell in love with this new Foo Fighters pinball machine. We looked into buying one. Only $7k-10k if you can find one 😱

Challenge completed!
I set a goal this year to hike at all of Indiana's State Parks and SRAs. My final hike put me on the Adventure Trail that goes through O'banon Woods State Park. What a challenge this trail was! So many ups and downs! 23.5 miles and 3,753 feet of elevation gain. This was my first multiple night backpacking trip and first time caching water. It's the hardest thing I've ever done!
34 State Parks and SRA's in all. Time for some rest!

A very light and very expensive package came in the mail today! Consider my mood elevated!
I have big plans for this tent!

I'm continuing to struggle sleeping comfortably while camping. I'm a side sleeper and get major hip pain... So I decided I need to do some practicing at home.
I think one of the keys for me is deflating the air mattress to where my hips are barely off the ground. This seems to take some of the pressure off my hips. I'm going to test some other ideas as well (various knee pillows, extra pad, etc...).

Friday hike part 2: Lincoln State Park
I hiked a 7.5 mile loop trail here. Nice park with wide, well maintained trails. I crossed train tracks twice and went over (and under) a state road all in the park. So weird. I took a small detour to a second lake at the park and had it all to myself. In fact, I didn't see a soul for over 2 hours.
In all yesterday, I hiked 10.5 miles with a loaded pack. I feel great today! Progress!
One more park to go!

Today I hiked the Rock Shelter Trail at Morgan Monroe State Forest. I remember hiking this for the first time about a year ago. It was my first real hike. I had only a paper map (which I lost). I remember thinking that the rock shelter was probably a man-made structure. Much to my surprise, it was a beautiful rock overhang.... What a difference a year makes. The hike was much easier this year, even though I forgot my trekking poles!

Today I hiked at Patoka Lake SRA in southern Indiana. The highlight of the trail was Totem Rock about a mile in. I hiked another 4 miles after that, apparently to clear the trail of spider webs. Very typical Southern Indiana trail with about 100ft of elevation change per mile. Great day to be outside!
Only 3 parks to go!

@scouten @andrewbriscoe I don't have a blog but post on in here and occasionally on FB with the hashtags #HoosierHikerChallenge2023 and #HHC2023
I only have about 32 parks to hit. Good luck and have fun on your journey!
