Shadowed Memories concentrated on a big horror author, Klive Emmons. While a mysterious doctor pulled up memories that had been long forgotten, or hidden away, his grip on reality was shaken. Horrors that he believed to only exist in nightmares began to haunt him, while the path to freeing himself from the pursuing invaders of his life seemed out of reach. In the end he finds an inner strength he didn’t know was there and manages to overcome the ordeal with some help, although his survival is not without tragedy.

In September I published Shadowed Memories Part 2, finishing the psychological horror tale that I started with Part 1 in 2019. I’m now working on a sequel that takes place about a year later that I’m currently calling Shadowed Memories: Dark Shadow. The dust has settled and our lead characters are still dealing with the aftermath in the form of mental scars. At the same time there’s a new spiritual movement that has seen growth globally, claiming to grant blessings of luck and protection to its adherents. Something sinister lurks just beneath the surface of their faith.

Il primo mese del nuovo anno si avvia verso la conclusione e, come di consueto, complice la pioggia e il freddo, la quantità di film visti è notevole. Le cose da vedere, soprattutto in sala, si accumulano sempre di più (se solo la smettessero di programmare le proiezioni stampa OGNI volta che la Roma gioca una partita infrasettimanale, diamine!). Devo recuperare La Grazia e Marty Supreme, e anche Sirat (che comunque uscirà su Mubi). In compenso, la scorsa settimana sono riuscito almeno ad assistere alla proiezione di Hamnet di Chloè Zhao, di cui vi parlo in maniera più approfondita nella recensione completa. Tra le altre cose hanno annunciato le nomination agli Oscar e, come sapete, non intendo commentarle, anche se vedere roba come F1 candidato come Miglior Film e non Panahi fa davvero gridare. Per questo non intendo fare commenti, parliamo piuttosto di film.
Good Time (2017): Il mese scorso, mentre ero sul set del nuovo film di Nanni Moretti, un ragazzo che faceva la comparsa mi ha parlato con grande entusiasmo di questo film dei fratelli Safdie (tra poco di nuovo in sala con l’atteso Marty Supreme, candidato agli Oscar). Inizialmente mi è sembrata una versione moderna e crime di Uomini e Topi di Steinbeck, visto che al centro della vicenda ci sono un tizio grande e grosso (Benny Safdie, uno dei registi), con problemi di salute mentale, e uno più piccolo e sveglio (Robert Pattinson). Ben presto però la storia prende una direzione tutta sua, con il tipo grosso che viene arrestato e con quello sveglio che attraversa la notte cercando un modo per farlo evadere. Amo i film che si svolgono interamente nell’arco di poche ore, inoltre le riprese notturne, i neon di una città squallida, dall’aria marcia e le peripezie affrontate dai protagonisti, riescono a tenerti incollato allo schermo per tutti i suoi 100 minuti. •••½Ave Ventura l’Acchiappanimali (1994): Rivedendo questo cult degli anni 90, che ha il merito di aver lanciato la carriera di Jim Carrey, la prima cosa che mi ha sorpreso è vedere Sean Young (l’incantevole Rachel di Blade Runner) nei panni di un odioso capo della polizia, non la ricordavo affatto. Per il resto è un film invecchiato decisamente maluccio, che si regge interamente sulle spalle di quel mattatore di Carrey, nonostante alcune gag che oggi appaiono davvero imbarazzanti, e i sorrisi di Courteney Cox, che ai tempi aveva appena cominciato a girare Friends. Non so se avete il fegato di lanciarvi come me in questo ritorno al demenziale, ma se proprio ci tenete lo trovate su Prime Video (sto valutando se far partire questa nuova abitudine mentre pranzo, ma non credo che né io ne voi lo vogliamo davvero). Sufficienza di stima, solo perché il buon Jim spara un paio di facce che valgono da sole il film.
•••Thirst (2009): Non vedevo questo filmone di Park Chan-wook da una quindicina d’anni e ancora oggi conserva tutto il suo fascino, il suo finissimo black humor e soprattutto la sua grandezza visiva. Un prete decide di sottoporsi a un esperimento medico, sopravvive per miracolo e si ritrova trasformato in qualcosa che non si può concepire: un vampiro. Come far coesistere l’etica, il voto di castità, la bontà della sua versione umana con la sete di sangue, l’istinto sessuale, la necessità di procurarsi cibo della sua versione bestiale? Una goduria continua, dove amore e morte, da sempre elementi fondamentali nel mito del vampiro, sono solo alcune facce di un dado che racconta anche senso di colpa, morale, fede e desiderio. Song Kang-ho (protagonista di Parasite e di Memorie di un Assassino di Bong) è gigantesco, capace di rendere credibile sia la fragilità spirituale che la deriva mostruosa del suo personaggio. Lo trovate su Prime Video, dove è stato inserita nel catalogo buona parte della filmografia di Park (tra cui la trilogia della vendetta e il carinissimo I’m a Cyborg But That’s Ok, che conto di rivedere presto).
••••Save the Green Planet (2003): A volte ci sono film di cui non avresti mai sentito parlare se non attraverso percorsi casuali. Sono incappato in questo film di Jang Joon-hwan grazie a Bugonia di Lanthimos, che ne è il remake, è il confronto tra i due è inevitabile. E, almeno per me, pende decisamente a favore del film del regista greco. L’originale sudcoreano è un oggetto davvero bizzarro, un B-movie impazzito che mescola fantascienza, thriller, commedia nera e delirio puro senza preoccuparsi troppo dell’equilibrio. La storia di un uomo convinto che il suo capo sia un alieno deciso a distruggere la Terra è raccontata con un tono isterico, sopra le righe, volutamente sgangherato. A tratti è divertente, ma spesso sembra più interessato a sorprendere che a scavare davvero nei personaggi. È un film che gioca con l’assurdo e con la paranoia, ma lo fa in modo caotico, come se fosse guidato dall’urgenza di un’idea folle più che da una vera necessità narrativa. Il risultato è affascinante per energia e libertà, ma anche irregolare, con momenti che sembrano appartenere, come dicevo, a un pazzo B-movie di fantascienza anni 90. Inevitabilmente ho poi voluto rivedere anche Bugonia (••••), che avevo già visto al cinema lo scorso autunno: Lanthimos prende lo stesso spunto e lo rende più coerente, più divertente, grazie anche a un cast di interpreti clamorosi (Emma Stone non gioca lo stesso campionato dell’intero cast sudcoreano messo insieme) e un finale che è puro cinema, grazie anche alla voce di Marlene Dietrich (dite quello che vi pare, ma la scena con Where Have all the Flowers Gone è un capolavoro).
•••I Poliziotti di Riserva (2010): Adam McKay, prima di consacrarsi con due filmoni come La Grande Scommessa e Vice, amava dirigere commedie demenziali con Will Ferrell (qualcuno ricorderà Anchorman o Fratellastri a 40 anni). Nel 2011 vidi questo film durante un volo da New York a Roma e ricordo che, mentre tutti in aereo dormivano, io ero costretto a controllare le risate per non disturbare e, lo sapete, quando uno cerca di trattenere le risate, sente il bisogno di ridere ancora di più. La trama non è il punto di forza di questo film, ma la strana coppia Will Ferrell – Mark Wahlberg funziona piuttosto bene, circondata da un cast d’eccezione per un film di questo livello (tra gli altri: Steve Coogan, Eva Mendes, Dwayne Johnson, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Bobby Cannavale). I dialoghi contengono battute del tipo: “Io sono un pavone, dovete lasciarmi volare!”, oppure “Vi do qualche dritta per non finire in carcere. Uno: fate qualsiasi cosa per non essere neri o ispanici” (oggi, purtroppo, suona ancor di più terribilmente attuale). Anche questo film l’ho visto a pezzi mentre pranzavo, per una buona e sana digestione. Se avete voglia di una serata spensierata (o un pranzo!), lo trovate su Prime Video.
•••½Una Storia Vera (1999): Uno dei film più sorprendenti di David Lynch, proprio perché è quello che sembra meno lynchiano di tutti. Niente scene oniriche, niente doppelganger, niente tende rosse o personaggi inquietanti. Solo una storia semplice, lineare, raccontata con una delicatezza che spiazza chi si aspetta il solito viaggio nell’inconscio. Tratto da una storia realmente accaduta (come da titolo italiano), un non troppo arzillo 73enne decide di percorrere circa 400km a bordo di un tosaerba per andare a trovare il fratello malato, con cui non parla da anni. Un’odissea in miniatura (dall’Iowa al confinante Wisconsin), lenta nei fatti e mai nel suo battito, costituita da incontri casuali, strade in mezzo al nulla, perse tra paesaggi infiniti. Forse è il film più umano di David Lynch (forse qualcuno dirà The Elephan Man, ci sta): ogni personaggio secondario sembra portarsi dietro una vita intera, che avresti voglia di seguire in un film a parte. La cosa che più ho amato sono stati proprio gli incontri, le belle persone vengono sempre attratte da te quando i tuoi valori sono nobili, quando il tuo viaggio è vero, sentito (parlo di questo tipo di viaggi proprio nel mio libro La Strada Altrove, dove faccio diversi incontri simili a quelli di Alvin Straight!). Film bellissimo, che sa andare alla velocità giusta e, soprattutto, non è mai ricattatorio o melenso. David Lynch sapeva anche fare cose di questo genere. Lo trovate su Mubi.

Well I guess the MC of my current project (Dark Shadow) only knows the Shentahn (group of Greater Friends aiming to upend human civilization) from hearing about their existence and aims. He's on an adventure to learn more about them to dismantle their plans. On the other hand, The Shentahn knows Kurai by way of their efforts to revive great terrors that have been sealed away. Kurai was one of those terrors.

Interesting read, but also horrifying. This stuff is already happening, writing spacing being flooded with ai stuff, and it's only going to get worse. This is also a place where the value of actual writers should go up, making our work worth more, but...
It's just horrible how people in creative fields, that bring so much enjoyment to the world, whether it's through TV/film, books, video games, are just art, we always seem to be getting the short end of the stick. Unless you're already a big name, it's tough out here ...

The streets vibrate with life. Quiet is but a faded dream while walking around in the big city. Thoughts are hard to hold onto when engines growl around every corner, crawling over the shuffling of people along the crowded sidewalks. Skyscrapers pierce the horizon, yet the sun skips its rays across steel and glass, causing some surfaces to sparkle while others become bright and eye blistering. There’s an intermingling of scents, both pleasant and foul, that threaten to further scramble the senses of those with heightened olfactory receptors. It’s here where something that doesn’t belong lurks, walking the streets donning a pair of shades, blocking out the noise with music humming in through oversized headphones. Following the flow of moving bodies, while trying to keep his composure, is the fiend hunter trapped in another world.

Where does inspiration come from? Everywhere and everything. It’s in the things we see around us, and in the conversations we have. It’s in the things we read, media we watch, and games we play. I’m heavily inspired by the works of the great horror novelist Hideyuki Kikuchi, more specifically the ongoing Vampire Hunter D series as well as Yashakiden: The Demon Princess. They both capture very unique horror vibes that in themselves feel influenced by anime/manga culture. VHD features a stoic hero on an endless quest, where every book pits him against more over-the-top enemies than the last, while being nestled in a post apocalyptic world unlike any other, with its blend of scifi and fantasy. Yashakiden on the other hand is a sickly sweet vampire series set within Demon City Shinjuku, where humans and monsters have this rough coexistence reliant on agreements between different communities, something that is thrown into disarray when an ancient vampire from another land comes into the mix. Every character is unique, wild, and fantastical in their own deadly way.
