  1. #liveforever "I suppose the most important memory is of Mr. Electrico. On Labor Day weekend, 1932, when I was twelve years old, he came to my hometown with the Dill Brothers…. He was a performer sitting in an electric chair and a stagehand pulled a switch and he was charged with fifty thousand volts of pure electricity. Lightning flashed in his eyes and his hair stood on end. I sat below, in the front row, and he reached down with a flaming sword full of electricity and he tapped me on both shoulders and then the tip of my nose and he cried, 'Live, forever!' And I thought, 'God, that’s wonderful. How do you do that?'...So when I left the carnival that day I stood by the carousel and I watched the horses running around and around to the music of 'Beautiful Ohio' and I cried. Tears streamed down my cheeks because I knew something important had happened to me that day because of Mr. Electrico. I felt changed. And so I went home and within days I started to write. And I’ve never stopped."

Yesterday I purchased The Bezzle ebook from craphound.com. I started reading it and couldn't put it down. It is riveting. It is the second novel with Martin Hench, forensic accountant. Martin works on the Red Team looking for mistakes made by crooks and fraudsters and he's very good at it. This time he's helping out a good friend who's the victim of bad luck and bad laws.
Doctorow makes use of current events in his plot so at times I felt almost physically ill when I considered the corruption and exploitation that occur in reality that are used to set up the story in the fictional "The Bezzle." It deals with serious topical issues and yet it is still manages to be fast moving and fun at times.
    I strongly recommend this book.

(of a man) having a body that looks big, strong and well shaped, as if he has done a lot of exercise:
Did you see how hench Ronaldo looked when he took his shirt off?
He's stronger than the henchest guy in the gym.

I just finished Red Team Blues. I started it on Saturday and finished it today. Couldn't put it down.

Martin Hench is a self employed forensic accountant that plays on the Red team, the attackers, and he's really good at it.

"They have to make zero mistakes; I just have to find one error. They have to be perfect; I just have to be systematic. It’s why I play the red team. Advantage to the attacker, as always.”

His latest job, however, has put him in jeopardy and on the defensive - on the Blue Team - and he hates it, until a good friend sets him straight.

I was walking with Zeus today and I was pondering his intelligence. He's not very obedient, but he's very sweet natured. Then the thought occurred to me, he convinces me to do what he wants far more frequently than I convince him to do what I want. So who's the intelligent one?

I just finished Blood Music by Greg Bear. Very interesting. It is one of the earliest science fiction novels about nanotechnology. It also deals with AI (alternative intelligence). It reminded me of Searle's Chinese Room thought experiment, that posits Von Neumann machine based AI is incapable of awareness. It may create the illusion thereof, but the physical underpinnings just are not capable of consciousness.
Applying that to current events, LLMs may underlie the faking of consciousness but not the real thing.
The AI in this novel has no such limitations.

Blood Music required more determination to finish than Moving Mars, but it is well worth the effort.

A certain restaurant chain has a website that I cannot access when using a vpn. Why do I need to be less safe online to see their menu? I am thinking about just not patronizing them anymore. It's unreasonable of them to work that way.

This seems like a real trade-off. On one hand, what power for the fishtail! On the other hand, not well streamlined.

Colorado state Rep. Don Wilson (R) “left a loaded, semiautomatic handgun in a bathroom at the Colorado Capitol on Tuesday night, an incident that comes as Democrats are trying to ban firearm possession in the building — and the GOP is fighting them,” the Colorado Sun reports.

“The Colorado State Patrol said the gun, a 9mm Glock, was left on a shelf inside a single occupancy, unisex restroom.”
