  1. New from @gerrymcgovern (CW: irony alert!)
"Tech Santa has arrived, and even though the ice is melting, his bag is still bulging with the latest, greatest tech toys for the boys. Let’s see, what do we have here? AI, bitcoin, shiny, shiny electric vehicles, scooters, vapes, and solar panels. Wind machines with gigantic blades that can reach almost as high as the Eiffel Tower. Wow! How could you not be impressed."

  2. I'm case you missed it...
An article appeared in The Guardian on Thursday, December 11th, entitled “Economic growth no longer linked to carbon emissions in most of the world, study finds”

But that headline is misleading and the study overclaims too.
We take it apart (need to fix formatting for mobile view).

  7. “Economic growth no longer linked to carbon emissions in most of the world.."

    Oh really?

    1) Emissions of greenhouse gases are still rising
    2) The degree of decoupling is far from enough
    3) for the United Kingdom, the reduction 2015-2023 was -18.41%, average
-2.51% per year. To reach net zero emissions by 2050, an annual reduction of 10% is needed.
    4) Those decoupling countries are not compensating for the growth in emissions elsewhere.

As UK politics turns both right and left, how do we get degrowth onto the agenda?

"Neither the embryonic Your Party, nor even the Green Party, provide evidence that their approach, extant or emerging, at this point in time, is adequate to the scale of the existential crisis facing humanity. This could change, and it should be a focus of the small degrowth movement in these islands "

  12. UK economy saw zero growth in July
    bbc.com/news/articles/c203edl1
"Faced with economic stagnation the elites are panicking. Wild eyed in the control room, they thrash around seeking to fix the unfixable, pushing all the buttons, pulling all the levers, to no avail, just making things worse. They try the old mantra “growth”, repeated endlessly, and given a priority above all else. ....."

  13. "Capitalism’s growth motor is broken and while there will be temporary repairs, nobody knows how to fix it long term. ‘Deregulation’, the weakening of hard-won protections for people and planet, is again fashionable but while it might give a temporary boost, it won’t change the underlying realities. Instead it will make their impact greater."

  14. A more sensible approach to #tax, from #GettingReal

"In short, the government can use taxation to shift away from economic activity that's damaging, reducing poverty and inequality,  and raising needed revenue for needed things.
It needn't fall on most people but must hit the wealthy and those on high incomes.

"It's not difficult, and would be overwhelming popular if well crafted."
