  1. "Bass (how low can you go)" - Simon Harris

#TOTP has not yet learned to make dance music look interesting.

Lots of shots of Simon behind his decks, lots of his keyboardist.

The dancer doesn't mug into the camera, and director Paul Ciani uses his preferred swooping crane shots, and there's no visual focus. It's a mess.

Handheld cameras were not yet in use, and Ciani needed them. Remember Xpansions from a few weeks ago? Same director, better tech.

  2. Simon Harris with "Bass (how low can you go)", dudes in bomber jackets walk around a white studio decorated with the word "bass", and trenchant house music plays.

Looking for all the world like Chris Lowe, he'll be in next week as well.

  3. Reviewing "Handcuffed" with Jonathan Ross.

A fascinating show, showing how it's mostly superficial things that divide people, and how a little tolerance and patience can be helpful.

Told its story in a brilliant way, not fully chronological, but logical and enhancing the tale.

    Enjoy every sandwich!

“Don't the sun look angry through the trees
Don't the trees look like crucified thieves
Don't you feel like Desperados under the eaves
Heaven help the one who leaves”

  6. @losttourist The current Top Twenty Hit Parade contains four records old enough to have been on the original Top of the Pops, and another one that pre-dates the "time-based one-time password" spec.

An observer might conclude that "vintage music" and "contemporary music" are one and the same thing.

  11. Our second #TOTP Mystery Year comes from the week when "Network 7" and "Blackadder III" won BAFTA awards.

CITV showed "Bros... The Story So Far". Daytime television show "Kilroy!" shared the problem of impotence, or what happens when one can no longer shaft.

Keeping it up tonight: the Hand-some Peter Powell and his minder, Sir Simon Bates.

  12. "Silent night" - Bros

Matt Goss goes through his vocal paces, the most extravagent singing line we've heard since Whitney Houston. Unusual lyric, turns out it's a more literal translation of the German original.

Bros were the band of 1988, the biggest pop stars. It's fitting that they should have the final word, and ensure it's a seasonal word.

  13. "There's no other way" - Blur

They'd been tipped as a band to watch for about eighteen months, and this breakthrough hit was ... a bit of a grower. Left me nonplussed on first hear, but the grooving guitars wound their way into my brain. The rest is history.

Love the camera angles, woozily drifting around the stage, getting clonked during the intro. Concentrate mostly on Damon, but loads of weird angles - particularly Alex's guitar solo.

  14. "Dreaming" - Ruff Driverz

Don't think i've heard this since 1998, which feels like a slight error on my part.

"Until the time is through" - Five

Known for their fast dancing and vigorous jumps, Five put on their suits and dance around their chairs and make a "sensitive" "slow" record and try to look all grown up. And it just about works.

Let's hope Ronan Keating doesn't get any ideas from this.

  15. "Everything is great" - Inner Circle

Debut for the Jamaican group, and reggae purists cherish their work from this era.

We saw them again on #TOTP in 1993 with the summer smash "Sweat (a la la la long)".

Why a Friday night TOTP ? The Beeb wanted to hold "A Song for Europe" on Thursday, selecting the best* song to represent the BBC at Eurovision.

A strike meant the contest only went out on radio, won by "Mary Ann" by Black Lace. Yeah, the "Agadoo" guys.

  16. "Where do broken hearts go?" - Whitney Houston

A massive vocal workout, shown through the medium of shooting pool and chattering in an office complex.

    #TOTP #WhitneyHouston

  17. "Telling stories" - Charlatans

Title track from the album, and later the title of Tim Burgess' autobiography.

At the start of the decade, they were just outside the Madchester scene. Seven years later they stood just outside the Britpop detritus: loud and guitary without being Oasis levels of stoopid.
