@davidbardos Earlier, on another instance, I wrote about how I learned Python by developing my own board game.
What I didn't remember was that I wrote a blog while doing it. I've found it during degoogling. Got a takeout and republished the posts on my new web 1.0 (static) blog here:

My first #GSM phone was an Ericsson A2618s. It was quite sturdy. It fell out of my pocket once while playing basketball and landed on the concrete floor. Not a single scratch or a crack. It served me for years after that. I remember reading the news stream in SMS on this phone's screen for weeks after 9/11.

Learning #rust with #rustlings is awesome! It has been a long time since I had so much fun while learning something new.

Back in the 14th century, one of my ancestors saved a king from certain death by rescuing him from the clutches of a group of 'Saracen warriors', as the grant of arms says.
Listening to my grandmother's sister tell stories about the family history was fun and amazing. But finding the actual genealogical papers in my grandfather's study decades later: that was incredible.

The first programming language I learned was Python. I learnt it myself from Gérard Swinnen's book to write automated tests for a pirate-themed board game I had invented (graphics made with Inkscape and GIMP).
Although the development was stuck at ~87% completion and never finished, Python and automated testing became my speciality and paved my career.

A story from yesterday:
Me: 💡 That article was interesting, let's install GearLever!
Mint: 👍 Okay, 740 MB will be downloaded and 2.7GB will be installed.
Me: 🤔 Too much space for such a simple app. Let's cancel.
Mint: 🤷♂️ No cancel button. 👍 Installation complete.
Me: 🤦♂️ Remove it!
Mint: 👍 Removed. 40MB reclaimed.
Me: 😨 Hey, where did the other 2.66 GB go?
Mint: 😅 I don't know what you are talking about.

I learned the basics of #Linux just to satisfy my curiosity at the age of 11 on a weekly workshop. Who would have thought that I would be working with Linux servers, and one day having Linux on my PC would feel more natural than using Windows.
My 11-year-old self would have been amazed at the vision of smartphones, Raspberries, k8s clouds and #SteamDeck consoles.
Though I worry a lot about technology being misused, it's refreshing to remember how inspiring technology is.

The first computer I used regularly was an i286 running DOS. It had a black and white display and a large 5.25" floppy drive. I had 12-20 games like Alley Cat, Battle Chess, DigDug and Pac-Man clones on single disk. My favourite was Space Commanders II. I was 4 or 5.

I miss MSN Messenger. It wasn't so bad being online only occasionally.
And Solitaire Showdown was great too! I liked the simplicity and the graphics too. Seems I wasn't the only one who loved it. I've just come across a remake project: https://github.com/T1mmos/cards2.0

I'm thinking of buying a new smartband or smaller smartwatch. Size matters, as I have thin wrists.
Any hints of some models that are not of American or Chinese brands? I loved #miband generation 1, 2 and 4.

Wow, #Microsoft is killing #Publisher... Again. At least where I used to live, you couldn't get it for years, between 1993 and 2007. The transition to #QuarkXPress was brutally painful. 😖 One of the most uncomfortable apps for me I've ever used.
I know it can do wonders, but it's hard for me to like something that's being forced on me.
I was glad to see Publisher back as part of #Office, although I never used it again.
Seems it's time to say goodbye to another piece of my youth. 👋

@itsfoss I tired to like Skype as some of my friends used it and they wasn't flexible to use #MSNMessenger.
My impression was that it was slower and less comfortable than :pplmsn: It had ugly ads, and no games. Its video compression engine was told superior over :pplmsn: but I've never experienced any difference on the webcams of that decade.
I was frustrated when it killed :pplmsn: I've never seen a company that used Skype for Business after Lync (:pplmsn: 4 business) was replaced too.

I'm not too fond of Microsoft, but I like this e-tree point collection minigame in Edge. I started to use it when my trust in Google had been completely shattered. #Microsoft #Edge #etree

@david_bardos Interesting article, and even more interesting website design!
One thing to note is that most people do not (and will not, ever) install an OS; they simply buy a device and Windows, macOS, Android, iOS come preinstalled. You could say they chose their OS by choosing the device.
In the same fashion, there are mobile Linux OSes, e.g. #PureOS and #FuriOS that just come preinstalled for users on devices: #Librem5, #LibertyPhone, #FLX1S+
I think it's this category of OSes that has the higher promise of adoption by normal non-technical folks.
