Doing some follow-up reading, this time with Rosenshine's Principles in Action, looking at the learning steps required. Never underestimate how long it could take for a student to save a file until they demonstrate automaticity. #caschat A quick flowchart:

If you are going to spec our a new laptop then do check if the storage (SSD) or RAM are supplied as separate removable modules or if they are integrated into the main board 🤔
If it's the latter, then they may not be upgradeable for the lifetime of the laptop. Should you need data recovery, it will be far more difficult to recover data that isn't backed up 🫤🤷♂️

Well, just after International Backup Day, I proved to myself my own saying that “no matter how many backups you have, it’s always too few”.
For some reason, my GlobalTalk node related to my Apple Internet Router Administrator’s Guide—Addendum I released last year was not being backed up like all my other VMs.
I just run a cron job once a week (Sunday early morning, my least likely time to be awake) that vacuums most of the files on my Ubuntu VMs and zips them up into a new archive in a folder on my Mac. I just delete the old archive after the new one completes.
I think perhaps because it was such a sparse node while I was setting up last year – just sort of a “first port of call” for people following the instructions in my Addendum – that I didn’t pay heed to the Three Golden Rules of Computing™:
1. Backup.
2. Backup!!
3. BACKUP!!!Couple that with a “delete the whole VM” command being right next to the “reboot vm” command (great UI, folks!), them both asking for some sort of confirmation ("delete boot disk, too” vs “reboot immediately”) which my mind conflated after 10-15 reboots, and boom! VM and boot disk gone, unrecoverable.
Thankfully, it’s not a critical machine, and other than it being a slow VM shape, I’ve been able to get something back online reasonably quickly (and it’s fully clean, so there’s that) – and yes, I have set up the cron job on the new VM!
I’ve lost some greets from the last year, almost all of which are on my main GlobalTalk node anyway, and the collection of files I put in the AppleShared folder for guests (I have all of it, just don’t have the particular combination of files I put in there).
There’s only one silver lining – I was able to test my setup disk images from go to woe again after not having done so since I last revised them last year...they work!
As a celebration of getting the node back online, guests who access the share will see the icon I was working on earlier tonight. More celebratory for me than anyone else, but still.
Don’t make me tap the sign! ☝🏻

Happy Birthday to Claude Shannon, known by many as the “father of Information Theory.” Shannon was an American mathematician and electrical engineer. In 1948, he published A Mathematical Theory of Communication, which effectively created the field. #ComputingHistory #ACM #PioneerPOV

Retro Memories: "I’ve had enough of the Mac...😡"
That’s what I wrote on January 14, 2000, about my Power Mac G3 and Mac OS 9 // 26 years later, I’m bringing Mac OS Classic back to life and rediscovering its clarity and sleek vintage look with a fresh perspective. An opportunity for me to look back at part of my digital journey. 💾

A while back I ran across a post where someone commented that the designers of IPv4 had made a mistake only using 32 bit addresses. Yes, it would have saved us hassle if they’d kept the variable-length addresses from the IPv3 draft, but I think they actually made a reasonable decision given what the technology world was like at the time, and I wrote an article to talk about that.

I've been lately reading quite a bit on #computingwithinlimits and #degrowth in general.
I keep thinking about the role of computer games on all this. We are so proud when pushing the hardware limits to create ever more beautiful experiences, but we never stopped thinking about the consequences of forcing our players to update their still functioning devices just for the sake of -mostly- higher end graphics.
Though indies have always stayed on the lower side of things... 1/3

Reading about the #Arduino acquisition brings up dear memories from its early days... Co-running/hosting some of the very first Arduino workshops in London in 2007/8, sharing the office with Massimo's mini-company TinkerIt Ltd., meeting the Arduino core team for dinners... prior to that, working on Processing with Casey Reas and Hernando Barragán (creator of Wiring, from which Arduino emerged, directly or indirectly[1]), using Arduino to teach colleagues (then seeing some of them switch careers as a [positive] result), teaching uni workshops and my kids about basic electronics, programming and physical interaction design (also remembering the buzz phrase "Physical Computing"), using it for a bunch of interactive installations (incl. for major clients), opening up my world, creatively and professionally... Such exciting times! Forever grateful!

@tankgrrl Nice! We were there a week ago at the new INIT HELLO Apple II conference and didn't see that little guy sidled up to the real thing. Very nice!

I often use #toottui to browse #mastodon from my #linux #commandline. Why? Not because I think I am #hackerman. It's because my favorite machine has a celeron N3060 CPU and a Mesa 400 Graphics. So, low end issues require low end solutions. #tui #cli #tuiallthethings #computinglikeits1989
