  1. I needed better and quicker access to information when sightseeing around London. I put together this page so I could listen to Wikipedia entries about a thing while looking at it. So now while I'm looking at the London Stone I can have the London Stone page read to me!

  6. @benfulton
agreed, I get asked all the time about how I like mine, I love it, and I recommend that if you are even thinking about it you should do it.

When I started I feel I was on the path to the rocking chair. but now I feel I have regained my strength and sense of balance.
    Just start slow. for me;
I'm not looking to be a world athlete, I just wanted to arrest decay:-)

  7. @benfulton Write your representative now. #RIPTA was going to cut 8 #bus #transit routes and reduce another 5 because of a “driver shortage” and all it took was someone to say “have you tried a hiring sprint with a competitive wage and help getting the CDL?”

Literally school bus drivers were getting paid more than RIPTA drivers.

Let’s just say the cuts have been tabled.

  8. @benfulton @carnage4life Correct, the real beginning is Facemash. IIRC it even appears in The Social Network movie.

2003 report from Harvard's student newspaper:

"The site was created entirely by Zuckerberg over the last week in October, after a friend gave him the idea. The website used photos compiled from the online facebooks of nine Houses, placing two next to each other at a time and asking users to choose the “hotter” person."

  13. @benfulton @leahawasser I think most Python tools that measure cyclomatic complexity are based on or use McCabe, from @nedbat (pypi.org/project/mccabe/). has it built-in, has plugins (McCabe is one), probably has it built-in too.

The functional comparison between multi-use-paths(MUP) and stroads in failure may be accurate but doesn't include the difference in price paid because of the failure.
On a #stroad a failure usually results in death or very serious injury; on a #MUP a bike hitting another bike or even a person, while not good, is usually never deadly.

The Edinburgh MESH project has made great use of #digitised street directories in association with mapping addresses on #OpenStreetMap

There's a good digitised collection of such directories for the UK at the University of Leicester archives (although MESH had higher standards). Pitt has a decent collection to 1945 for Pittsburgh. However, more fun for post-war period to ask people: there's amazing recall for old shops.

  16. @MichaelWhelan Love the picture, though it has a manic pixie dream girl vibe that I didn't get from the book (which, admittedly, I haven't read for more than 30 years)

  17. Dogs Walk of Fame

In a tribute to famous dogs, the Royal Kennel Club placed six plaques on park benches in Battersea Park.

Some of the honored dogs included Lassie, Toto from The Wizard of Oz, Bullseye from Oliver!, and Fang from the Harry Potter film series.

As far as I can tell no one ever followed up to add more plaques though.

  18. Deep below London, HS2’s twin tunnels advance towards Euston station

"According to HS2, both TBMs are currently progressing at speeds of up to 150 metres per week as they carve their way through the London clay and head towards passing under residential neighbourhoods. As of a couple of days ago, TBM Madeline was starting to pass under the Grand Union Canal near Scrubbs Lane, with TBM Karen is about 100 metres behind."

  19. @nicholdav @astrojuanlu I think maybe the most important law of software architecture is Conway's Law - the structure of the program will tend to reflect the structure of the organization. Most scientific apps will probably reflect the very simple structure of the lab that supports them.

  20. The amount of money local governments spend on putting in and ripping out infrastructure boggles my mind.

"The council said the proposed changes would “introduce expanded capacity for vehicles travelling towards the town centre” and “pave the way” for an already-approved new bus lane on London Road"

We need a sexier way to say "Induced Demand". Something like, "People use what they're given".

  21. Lawmakers eye road spending review as universally hated Mid-States Corridor nears construction

"Latest cost estimates put the total project at more than $3 billion...We’ll have to see how many dollars we have available to do that, because we certainly don’t want to do a huge project like that and then our safety improvement projects get put on hold,”

What IS this? The legislature doing sensible things is disrupting my whole worldview.

  22. London's West End streets could become a vast new public plaza under latest plans

"The plans would see Regent Street St James’s pedestrianised, and Haymarket converted into two-way traffic.

Further south, at the junction with Pall Mall, they propose pedestrianising Waterloo Place, the wide open area filled with statues and grand buildings."

  23. Most great actors who played Scrooge were hamstrung by the production. Patrick Stewart was dumbed down for Hallmark. Michael Caine had all his scenes stolen by his costars. To play Scrooge well you need to be cold-hearted, sentimental, terrified, giddy, and joyous. Albert Finney nails most of those but a singing role doesn't quite do it. Alistair Sim does them all perfectly.

  28. Man, 79, dies following collision in Rayners Lane

I am appreciative of Harrow Online and how it reports on the number of people in Harrow being killed by cars, but I have to say the number of them makes me really nervous. Is this how many people are being killed in every district, or is Harrow particularly dangerous? 😬
