Update on the lab rack decision: I started printing the Lab Rax. It has the minimum size that I need (5U) and can be expanded (up to 10U). It also has a very strong community behind it, which will make it very easy to find parts.
I'll be sure to post photos when I'm done.

Well, it's the end of an era: my 3 Lenovo M720q are now a full Talos Linux cluster, Proxmox is gone, and the Framework Desktop has been repurposed as a dedicated game station running Bazzite.
Most likely I will migrate from my old Razer laptop to the Framework Desktop, and make it my only workstation, but not today.

Hey folks, if anyone ever followed my blog post about enrolling the Talos UEFI keys into the Lenovo M720Q Tiny, you might want to look at it again.
I realized I forgot one step, which is completely optional, and may vary according to your security posture, but doing so provides better security.
After you enroll the Talos key, the BIOS switches to "User Mode", which allows the OS to change the keys. Ideally you should go back into the BIOS and change to "Deployed Mode". This way you can only change the keys by physically booting the machine.
Sorry about that.

@badnetmask I know the keyboard I want, but it seems they don't actually make it anymore.
I've got an ANSI layout Nuphy Air 60 with brown switches, and it's pretty good... not too loud, 60% size, low profile, hotswap Cherry-style switches in case I fancy a change, does multiple BlueTooth connections, has a 2.4Ghz dongle and even does USB-C wired connection!
However switching between the ANSI layout on that and ISO layouts on all my other devices is bending my brain (there is an extra key on an ISO layout, so I'm missing some punctuation that's normally easily accessible) so I want an ISO version.
Whilst they do list a UK ISO layout on some parts of their website, it's never in stock and I've never seen one on Youtube or anything. Shame as it's a reasonably dope keyboard and sensibly priced.

@badnetmask @rachel I quite like #Excalidraw - gives nice handwritten/whiteboard vibes

Home lab architecture update: two of the Lenovo boxes in the picture below became Talos nodes, together with the Framework Desktop. The third Lenovo became a Proxmox node.
Yep, I'm back on the Proxmox bandwagon.
Now I have a bit of everything: Talos running Kubernetes, Proxmox running VM/LXC and Raspberry Pi running Docker.
At some point the three Raspberry Pis are going away, and the services are going to be distributed between Talos and Proxmox, then they are going to become back-end compute for shenanigans (like a Home Assistant dashboard, for example).

@badnetmask @mmeier @homelab I have two HP EliteDesk Mini and a Dell OptiPlex Micro, all running Proxmox headless.
most of these so-called "1-liter" PCs ship with CPUs in the 35-watt range, though you can get 65-watt ones which will be louder if you make them work hard.
I don't know about AMD yet, but with Intel CPUs it's possible in Linux to tell it how much power it can use for short & long periods, so if you want to limit noise and power consumption, that's at least possible. not sure about BSD.
as far as expandability, Dell tends to skimp on NVMe slots. HP EliteDesk Mini and ProDesk Mini often have 2. I like to put an Optane stick in one NVMe slot and use it for swap and partitions like /var/log.
HP also has a lot of little option daughterboards, such that you can add a NIC or a high-speed USB port with PD in (and then get a USB NIC with PD in and power your PC thru it).
you can also get cards for the m.2 wifi slot which accept a tiny NVMe drive, or add a couple SATA ports, or add a NIC (which you then have to mod the case to add).
be aware that if you get a DDR4 #1LPC, you are limited to 64GB of memory.

Macrodroid is very bad at variables and fetching data.
(Better make everything a global var lol)
I still have a #old #Tasker version installed cause it helps with fetching #Poweramp trackids...
Shame arlosoft is too busy.
On the flipside #Tasker has issue with staying in RAM at times
And then there is #XPosedEdge which has its own set of issues..
Tasker has way more plugins too.
These programscan enable simple #webapps to (inter)act wih your device.
Pretty neat

I wrote a very basic #Ansible playbook to help people set up #PiHole with #DNSOverHTTPS (#DoH) directly installed on a Debian-based host (Raspberry Pi or small VM). It's available on my GitHub repo. I hope you find it useful! #HomeLab #SelfHosted

Oh hey. Today is Thursday, and you know what they say about Friday!
Don't wait to do it tomorrow when you can procrastinate even more and do it next week. 😄

After procrastinating a decision about which Kanban tool to use, I finally weighed all the available choices and landed on @vikunja
I think this was the first time that a software having their presence on Mastodon made part of my reasons to choose something. Another one is the integration with Home Assistant.
So far, so good. Haven't used it for more than a few minutes to create some fake tasks, but it's been nice. Now I need to figure out how to migrate from my old Kanboard.

If you could not find an excuse to use Bazaar instead of straight going with Flatpak in the command line, I'll just give one that is now good enough for me.
I wanted to install a given app, and just because it already showed up in the Gnome search list, I just clicked, and that brought me to Bazaar. When I clicked "Install" it gave me a pretty interesting warning to let me know that the application is high risk, and it was very specific about which security concerns there are.
I tried to install the same app using the Flatpak command line and I did NOT get the same warning.
Sold. Bazaar all the way now.

That's a wrap for DevOpsDays Raleigh. Another great conference, with a very interesting note: it had the right amount of non-AI vs AI talks, and most importantly, whenever AI was mentioned was relevant, and not a vendor talk. The open spaces fostered some great conversations, and the hallway track is always amazing. Can't wait for next year!

I had an awesome time leading an informal conversation about using home labs as a learning tool during DevOpsDays Raleigh. It was fun to talk to people in various stages of the spectrum: some who want to start one all the way to people who gave up on it. 😄

Once again I'm one of the very rare people wearing shorts in a tech conference. What is happening with this world? 😄

Oh no! I'm back on the Gridfinity craze! 🤪

Wow. PETG filament is so finicky. Even when you think it's dry, you have to dry it even more. 🙄

Everything in life has pros and cons: Kubernetes in the home lab makes a lot of things more complicated, but a lot of other things less complicated. Replacing Telegraf + InfluxDB with Node Exporter and sending directly to Victoria Metrics gives me much more visibility on the Raspberry Pis. On top of that, using SNMP Exporter to collect data from Synology allows me to completely get rid of containers running inside an appliance. Silver linings.

Unpopular opinion: I have fought with ZFS under Talos for months, but in reality what I needed was Longhorn.
Yeah, yeah, I now, different things. But that's just to say that ZFS is not the silver bullet that some people try to convince you of.
