Maybe this already happens? But from Austrians' politicians point of view it's probably more important that neutrality is very popular in #Austria
I just wish we had a honest discussion about it. Basically, because neutral Austria became surrounded by #NATO countries over the last decades, many assume that we will be fine anyway.I think it's clear that the selfish way Austria (and also #Switzerland) currently defines its neutrality is bad for PR in other countries. If Austria wants to take part in something, neutrality is not a problem, but if the government does not want to take part in an initiative, it's "Oh no, we're neutral".

Also 1980s: #Scandinavians develop a mixed type of #office layout with different and smaller open areas for informal meetings and cellular offices for concentrated work, freely accessible from the same areas. Yet, in English-speaking countries we're *still* debating the pros and cons of #open #plan! It's baffling and infuriating at the same time.

Tim K #Mak has been delivering some pretty good reporting from Ukraine for a while on his blog "The #Counteroffensive" and today's foray into the country's culinary traditions is no different. In it he shines a light on the speed with which #Ukraine is leaving her #Soviet past behind to establish herself as a nation with a unique culture and outlook, using Anthony #Bourdain's Ukrainian episodes of his TV show "No reservations" as a backdrop to today's food scene.

The surprise is complete when after all the emotional ballads sung in a lilting voice of extraordinary refinedness Gardot returns with the album "Currency of Man" and in it little rock jewels like "Preacherman".
-
One of my most surprising discoveries recently is Melody Gardot, an American Jazz singer with a quiet, yet precise expressiveness I have not often heard in contemporary singers. Her performance of "Love Me Like a River Does", sung live in Paris with an unnerving intensity, has the power to make you lose track of time.

And, 30 years later, a response to #Kundera by #Ukrainian intellectual Mykola #Riabchuk: "Shifting the Wall Further East."
https://www.aspen.review/article/2021/shifting-wall-east-kunderas-tragedy-central-europe-three-decades-later/Ryabchuk points out that Kundera's setting "Western" European traditions against "Eastern" non-European ones - pushed nations further east outside the consciousness of Europeans, where they were left to fend for themselves against an #Russian will to dominate.

The first is Milan Kundera's "Un Occident kidnappé" of 1984, here in English translation: "The Tragedy of Central Europe"
https://www.nybooks.com/articles/1984/04/26/the-tragedy-of-central-europe/
#Kundera sets the culture of Central European nations against the foreign culture of Russian colonisation, bemoaning in passing the demise of the #Habsburg Empire.
-
Was made aware of two very thought-provoking essays about Central Europe. As a non-expert I can't really judge them, still, they fascinate me and make me want to read more. They deal with the problems Central and Central-Eastern European nations faced defending their cultures against an overweening #Russian impulse of colonisation.

@uanews I recently watched the film "The Railway Man" and what struck me from very early on in the movie wasn't so much the inevitable arc of the story, but that these #veterans seemed to have had only minimal help with what they had been through, other than a rather depressing veteran's club. I think #PTSD still gets too little attention and if an app can help with the mountain of work that needs to be done to help the soldiers, I'm all for it. #ukraine #база

Extraordinary! I'm lost for words. I don't know what to call this? #Inhuman doesn't catch it, because even an animal would understand that you don't love whoever intentionally inflicts death and destruction on you ... Alien? Certainly #psychopathic. That reference to Chechnya. Deeply disturbed. And very disturbing. A vision of hell on earth.

Gough Island: Worker sought for one of world's remotest places
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-65254130
A British wildlife group is looking for someone to work on one of the remotest islands in the world for 13 months.
#Gough Island is around 1,500 miles from the #African mainland - and, with no airport, reaching Gough involves a seven-day boat ride from South Africa.
There are seven full-time employees - and eight million #birds - who call Gough home.
