No waterfall today on WaterfallWednesday, but how about a wave crashing over a large rock formation as viewed from underwater? Saw a number of such events while snorkeling around a rocky point last week. Waves were crashing regularly over the rocks--- had to be careful and not get sucked into the swirling chaos of each crash! #ocean #snorkeling #waves

Just now returned from a fantastic winter adventure in the White Mountains, NH. Perfect weather and trail conditions allowed me to hike a substantial loop up high -- first ascending to a summit, then hiking a section of the ridge (hiking up and over other peaks), and ending by descending from the last peak. 1) Curious how I kept the flat face of the disk-like device horizontal while I hiked?
2) Garmin strangely refers to what I believe is "transmit power" as "protocol" in three models-- it is correctly called "transmit power" on the "plus" model
3) Garmin doesn't advertise the differences in power. They recommend clear overhead. Unfortunately, #hiking in the wilderness frequently involves forests and may require the extra power!

3/4 Last week, I used my new Garmin Inreach Messenger Plus for 20 hours in the same heavily wooded areas I had used my mini, including 10 hours of snowing and heavy overcast. It worked great! Connect times ranged from a few seconds to a few minutes (NOT 10's of minutes like with my mini). Not a scientific test, but not a single long delay among the 22 transmissions of text messages-- looks very promising that there is improvement! (CONT)

2/4 Here are some specs of the four Garmin Inreach models of interest: mini/mini2/messenger/messenger-plus have transmit powers (at Iridium satellite frequency) of 31.7/31.8/35.9/39.7 dBm. The "plus" has 3.8 dB higher power than the regular messenger and 8.0 dB higher than my mini (which translates to 6.3 times the power of my old unit). With such an increase in power, I was hopeful for faster connect times with the "plus". (CONT)

In my pursuit of trying out different local trails beyond my favorites, I hiked a trail today that went around this picturesque lake. A few weeks ago, I hiked a long, straight trail from a distant trailhead to/from this lake. Looking to combine the two into a substantial "lollipop" loop in the future. Saw this interesting #wavy pattern in the snow at the #ocean earlier this week. The pattern appears to form from interacting with ocean waves at high tide, then is exposed like this at low tide. Nature makes great art! #WavyWednesday #CapeCod #beach

Here is a nice 3D visualization of our horseback ride/hike to the lake in the Wind River Range last week (using CubeTrek). Click on the link, then click on "satellite" for the best view. I recorded this on the return, beginning at the lake and ending at the trailhead. Check out the steep section at around 1-mile from the lake. OK on foot, left the horses behind with someone for that section.

Returned last night from Wyoming-- had a blast! Visited three locations. Highlight was our second day of horseback riding in the Wind River Range. Rode to a high elevation meadow, then continued on foot down a steep trail (not suitable for horses) to a lake surrounded by rocky cliffs. More pics to come!
