  1. Countdown Day 95 of our "100 days to launch" challenge.
Back to insulating the forecabin. Today we are adding the second layer which is 40mm of XPS sheet

  2. If you are interested in our boat refit and journey towards a Sustainable retirement sailing around the world then @SustainableSailing is where we are putting progress, photos and more.

  3. What surface finish is appropriate for my #DIY #Busbar ? I'm wondering if I should polish them?
They are 50mm x 6mm Tinned Copper and I'm using 316 Stainless steel bolts with Tinned Copper crimped on lugs (onto tinned Oceanflex cable ranging from 6mm2 to 95mm2)

  4. New #Video
Can we safely stretch our 12mm #Dyneema #DIY Main Mast #shrouds & stays?
After Jane did all the #splicing for the main mast #rigging, we had to stretch everything

  5. A cold North East wind today (over 20kts) so we did a quick trip to our shipping container, then Jane has been #splicing the first #dyneema main mast chainplate loop (much harder splicing 12mm than 9mm).
After some writing for work I've been working on wiring diagrams (learning and using #QElectroTech). I like that I can pretty easily create basic custom elements such as our Batteries, #Victron boxes etc.

  6. A beautiful old #SailingShip just went past heading South West through the #Menai #Straits
#Schooner rig with mainsail, foresail, jib and even a small square sail
    Lovely day for #Sailing

  7. Nightmare journey to Beaumaris in our Nissan Leaf. Now waiting for the RAC because we haven't been able to charge the car on the way.
Stopped at 2 Macdonald's where only 1 #InstaVolt working and people ahead of us saying 1 hour wait.
    2 #Osprey not working. 1 #GeniePoint not working. 2 #Swarco wouldn't accept our contact less payment. Now #Podpoint at #Lidl not working.
We ignored 3 #Ecotricity points as they haven't worked for months.
Only 5 miles range left, 18 miles to Bangor Osprey charger.

  8. Made some actual progress today. My first 4 #mc4 #solar cable #crimps and my first 4 ferrule crimps.
All these boxes are bolted on. Got some different sized crimp lugs coming tomorrow for the #Renogy Rover boxes.
Should be able to get these connected to 6 solar panels tomorrow (unless we focus on the ac side of things which also needs doing on a dry day).

  9. In our book on Sustainable Sailing I've grouped some changes as "The big wins", so far I have:
    - Abandon New
    - Right Sizing
    - Sorting out your poop
    - Adding more simplicity
    - Add more DIY
    - Add more time
    - Stop Flying
    - Pareto Vegan

Of these "Stop Flying" seems incredibly significant (as a way of cutting #emissions); a challenge to a huge temptation when world cruising; and incredibly controversial.

What is your take on #StopFlying ? Do we push it?

  10. Day 98 of our "100 day to launch" challenge.
Cracking on with the jobs.Jane is preparing to insulate the aft cabin entrance. Dave is working on the Electric Motor Battery Box and the hot box for composting the solids from our composting toilet. Plus he has found a cheating way to get taps in the galley

  11. Day 99 of our "100 day to launch" challenge.
Jane is insulating the forecabin. Dave is working on the Electric Motor Battery Box and during a storm with gusts up to 60mph thinking about hacking our Calypso Wind Instrument.

  12. Going slow and gentle today. However, the chimney through deck heatshield for our #Refleks stove is fitted. With the insulated chimney and H cowling it looks great. We will only use the full height at anchor with the boom moved to the port side. However, our understanding is this should help the quality of the burn.

  13. @governa very useful for those of us looking to use #RaspberryPi5 on boats for navigation etc with #OpenCPN
It does mean that for @SustainableSailing we will be using #Debian as our first choice distribution.

  14. I'm hoping that we can connect with people about #RaspberryPi #OpenCPN and #SignalK on here.
We want these to be at the heart of tech on our boat for #Sustainable #Sailing #Navigation for cost, freedom and reliability.

  15. I'm thinking this is going to be the display for our boats electric motor dashboard. It's a #raspberrypi #PiZero2W with a "Bar screen" 400x1280 pixels just under 70mmx210mm box
Either using a web browser and a #HomeAssistant dashboard or something more custom written in #Rust with #slint_ui

  16. I saw this on the #RaspberryPi Facebook group.
A really neat #opensource cross platform (written in #Flutter ) app that connects to #SignalK for boat instrument displays.
    Really cool.

  17. @cwebber wow that is brilliant!
Suitable for @SustainableSailing for boat systems such as navigation (add a waterproof touch screen display).
Also would be great for my #PrayerOfHannah project to run worship in Churches with no broadband and where everything has to be packed away.
    Pity about the cost though.

  18. I have a weird body clock. Couldn't stay awake at 8pm. In bed well before 9pm. Now at 2am wide awake, wanting some great coffee and going to do some #RustLang coding on #PrayerOfHannah for a few hours.
This is why @SustainableSailing is on a boat with an aft cabin and why I use a hand coffee grinder - it means @Jane can sleep uninterrupted 😍

  19. I've just bought #DesignJustice "Community-Led Practices to Build the Worlds We Need" by @schock designjustice.mitpress.mit.edu

I think there are valuable connections in various threads of my life:
    - my work as a #Methodist Minister in #Wythenshawe
    - my planning for retirement passion of @SustainableSailing
    - my programming side interest with #PrayerOfHannah codeberg.org/Dave42W/PrayerOfH

Design is everywhere and far too often disconnected from justice by the privileged

  20. Today's YouTube short: Jane has finished the next section of the wheelhouse enclosure. Also progress on the extension #boatrefit #cockpit #enclosure

  21. Another YouTube Short: Wheelhouse enclosure, 1st section finished and fitted #boatrefit #enclosure #wheelhouse #diy youtube.com/shorts/QdHdaCtS9rQ
The first visible fruits of all @Jane 's labour.

  22. So @Dave42W got some nice speciality coffee beans for Christmas. So taken the next step towards great coffee while #Sailing #LiveAboard
Ordered a #1zpresso k-ultra 1zpresso.coffee/k-ultra/ handgrinder and timemore nano scale. Should allow precision coffee with our #AeroPress maybe a #Flair58 one day?
At sea will use a standard electric filter coffee machine on a gimble for safer coffee making.

  23. Another 2 main mast 12mm #dyneema shrouds stretched to 1,500kg (despite strengthening the timber framework we feel this is the safe limit).
Then slight panic when the crane scale showed a low battery and we realised we didn't know where the charger was. Anyway found something from Netgear that seems to be working.
3 more to go (I think)

  24. This morning we had the remaining 12mm #dyneema #rigging for our main mast in various states of completeness. That was so we could record video with some thick dyneema splicing tips we haven't elsewhere.
This evening Jane has finished two of the eyesplices for what's left ie 2 backstays, 2 cap shrouds and forestay. Just past halfway.

  25. Another YouTube Short: Wheelhouse enclosure, 1st section finished and fitted youtube.com/shorts/QdHdaCtS9rQ
