GrumblePost Warning: Every time I touch Hashicorp's Packer tool, I lose DAYS of my life to any number of issues. On the surface it sounds like a great thing to use (immutable OS images are A Good Thing). And it is. But it touches so many complex moving parts (infra platforms (permissions, storage options, networking, resource isolation..), OS (cloud init, networking, disks, systemd config), config management tools) that it will eat your time like it's nothing.. #Packer #HashiCorp #OSImages

It's my 1 year anniversary at work. I have survived my first year as an educator! Everyone who told me the first year would be tough wasn't wrong! In fact, they downplayed just how tough it is. I am not comfortable with this, but I can't get past the idea of using a Useless Use of Cat as a good introduction to Linux pipes for newbies! If I do use it as an example, I'm going to feel dirty, and will be compelled to pile more stuff on to the students as I explain both what is happening, and why they shouldn't do it. Need to find a command (on WSL) that's not `cat` but still dumps some relatable information.. #UUoC #Linux #Education #Teaching

So, I'm finding that teaching sometimes feels like a long uphill trek, with little to no pay-off along the way. Might just be me, might just be what I'm teaching. But I'm someone that *needs* some payoff. Safe to say this is one of my least favourite bits of this job. However, I visited some of my apprentices at work last week, and they've only gone and implemented a concept I taught them about, and it's working and they're happy with it, and their manager is happy with it. I'm teaching a small cohort of DevOps apprentices, and while planning their second year out (my first full year of teaching), I saw a glittering pathway to DevOps excellence unfurl before me. So MS are the lower-friction option for getting students doing stuff on the cloud (they offer free credits with no credit card needed, unlike Goog, AWS). I was looking to get into the GitLab for Education scheme. You must be a degree-issuing institution to get on that program. Well, I finally did it. Biggest hurdle was shrinking the C: drive. The MFT had been stuck 60GB from the end of the disk. WIndows wouldn't move it, GPartEd wouldn't move it. https://www.partitionwizard.com/ came to the rescue & I'm now dual-booting Bazzite 42 and Windows 11! Copied one game out of the Windows Steam library to see if things worked, and it did. I then just re-formatted my dedicate games drive (a second SSD), and started re-downloading stuff. I've learned more than I wanted to know about NTFS, and not enough about BTRFS. Adapting to the immutable OS model is going to be interesting, but I have `brew` to install all the cool command line tools I want (ripgrep, btop, fd, etc.).
