With the 1.0 update of #Timberborn they introduced automations and that includes webhooks, kinda breaking the fourth wall. So when @simonbs released his new brrr.now app which can create notifications on my iPhone via a webhook, I knew what I needed to try. I can now leave the game running and get notified on my phone when important things are happening. What a time to be alive!

#JasonHickel writes that while the climate movement has done amazing work, it’s hit a wall — and that wall is #capitalism.
It prioritizes profit over people or the planet, so it keeps investing in #FossilFuels because they’re more profitable, even though we know what needs to change.
Only by moving toward economic #democracy — where we control production for social and ecological goals, not just profit — can we realistically solve the #ClimateCrisis.

"I think that democracy is key here.
Let me first just back up and point to something else, which is that when you say these things, people are like: Oh, that sounds like a totalitarian economy where you have some kind of shadowy elites kind of planning things. I’m like, mate, we actually already live in a totalitarian economy, where capital controls what gets produced."

"We’re told that capitalism is almost synonymous with innovation. And I really feel that’s not true ... We live in a shadow of the world that we could live in.
We could have much ... more durable products. We could have better public transit systems that are high quality, efficient, integrated ... So, we could have much more efficient buildings. Our appliances could be more efficient."

"If you’re using money to mobilize a bunch of additional public production, you’re competing with the existing forms of production that are also demanding labor and resources and factories in the economy.
And that’s going to cause inflation unless you reduce demand elsewhere in the economy and that’s precisely what degrowth provides an important answer to is we can scale down less necessary forms of production, thus liberating resources ..."

"Corporations don't produce money. They produce things, and it's ridiculous for us to say that we need to grow production ... of cruise ships, and 'AI', and private jets ... to increase production of public transit and building insulation, or, public health care ...
You don't need to increase production of bad things to increase production of good things."

"People think, oh, you just want to slow down the entire economy and this is obviously going to leave us in poverty. But degrowth actually calls for, let's identify very energy intensive and materially intensive forms of production that are also socially unnecessary. Like mostly are organised around capital accumulation and elite consumption, etc, etc."

If your government is conducting or assisting a #genocide and doing it in the face of overwhelming popular opposition, then you do not live in a #democracy . Your ruling class does whatever it wants. This is a core problem and people need to grapple with it. -
From 1 month ago: https://youtube.com/watch?v=6_3j3sHP6eg
In The first few minutes
#JasonHickel explains why capitalism is fundamentally undemocratic and how this makes stopping the ecol-climate clusterfck unrealistic.I don't quite see how democracy could solve it on time – because humans are humans🤷♀️.
But Jason's perspective is a real eyeopener!Haven't watched it all yet. Might add some more notes once I did.

@StefanMuelller @jasonhickel #Hickel is definitely worth reading, of course his book, but also his papers. Would love to read him more often in my timeline.

Inspired by @jasonhickel's book Less is More, here is a list of ways we can progress beyond #capitalism, save the planet, and each other.
Step 1: Make #plannedObsolescence illegal. You know how your phone dies after a few years? How fridges don't last nearly as long as they used to? "The technology already exists to make appliances last on average 2-5 longer than they presently do". We could just make it illegal to artificially cripple appliances and technology.
