  1. I got back from a lovely trip to the Crystal Coast in North Carolina. We stopped for a day in Richmond, VA, on the way down.

While there, we stopped at Bargain Books Richmond and I got a bunch of cool books. I could have stayed there for hours and gotten way more books. I found a binder filled with accessory patterns. I love how this creator shot the final project: with a cameo by her cat. I also spotted one of @grammargirl books in the writing section. 🧶 #knitting #usedbook #bookstore

  3. This Saturday, while visiting with my in-laws in Hadley, MA, we got to spend some time at Grey Matter Books. It's one of those used bookstore archetypes that I love: a shop that appears fairly small at first but which expands shelf to shelf, room to room, and every room holds new treasures.

I ended up getting Arrival by Chiang, an annotated guide to fairy tales, and a noir mystery collection.

  11. @Editrix_Rachel How did you know, lol? Yes, I have one monitor dedicated to my income & expenses spreadsheet (the same one that's part of #TheEditorsAffairs, customized for myself). The others are usually the document I'm editing, a style sheet, and a browser window.

My desk is pretty big, but the tradeoff is that my office is a corner of the living room and I don't have a door I can close.

  14. One thing that I hate about hustle culture is the idea that if you love your job, it's not work. I love editing, but I can only put in so many hours before I'm wiped.

  16. Hey @edibuddies and other copyeditors, do you miss the ACES biweekly chats?

I know I do. Luckily, my friend @carolinavonkampen decided to do something about it. She is holding a #NotACESChat this Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on Twitter about working from home with #StetPets.

  18. As a copyeditor, I've learned that most of my clients have words, and punctuation marks that they love to use. One of my jobs is to replace some of these instances to vary the rhythm and flow of the sentences, which helps make the text read smoother.

But then I got used to working with one writer who, for example, liked semicolons. This means that when my next writer prefers em dashes, I have to recaliberate my suggested revisions; semicolons are now back on the menu!

  19. When I was first starting out as a copyeditor around 7 years ago, I realized that I had a legitimate need for red marking pencils. For whatever reason, it seemed to me like only teachers and professors should be able to buy them, so I felt slightly rebellious purchasing my first pack.

  20. Some of the pictures I took in Tunbridge, Vermont, where I attended the Vermont Sheep & Wool Festival. One vendor didn't just have an Emotional Support Chicken on display, the chicken had pasties or tassels covering its breasts. The needle-felted witch is so cool, and I got to talk to the maker about the process of making her.

  22. @WendyBaldwinLinguaverse @carolinavonkampen @Editrix_Rachel yes, Carolina is live reporting superstar! I want to go off the bird site. I used it for the Professional Editors Guild conf. a few months ago and got no engagement at all. With and conferences coming up next month, am wondering where are gathering for any live threads to be most useful.
