I find Forbes to be hit-or-miss, but this one has so many eloquent quips that I had to share:
https://www.forbes.com/councils/forbestechcouncil/2026/05/14/the-ai-layoff-bill-is-coming-due-and-ctos-are-going-to-pay-it-twice/At the end of the day, it's about accountability.
> Two out of three chief executives are buying a tool they cannot evaluate, cutting staff on capability claims they cannot verify and calling the result a strategy. On a conference stage, this is called vision. On a balance sheet, it is called an unfunded liability.

I'll be in #Nashville July 20th–July 31st helping with the final stages of a physical network deployment. My hotel and the deployment site are both near the airport, so I'm only anticipating having time over the weekend (the 24th/25th/26th) to get to the more interesting parts of the city.
I'd love recommendations on venues and/or activities. I tend to go for speakeasy-type spots — quiet places with character and possibly a good cocktail or two. Loud and crowded is usually *not* my scene, though I can grin and bear it if there's something worth seeing or doing.
And if any of y'all will be in the area, maybe for #SharkFest26, I'd love to try to connect!
(I'm anticipating a second trip to the area in mid-August, but that won't be finalized until the beginning of July.)

Okay, after years on #Joplin as my primary notes app, I'm finally considering switching to #Obsidian. It's *at least* as fully featured, and there's a plugin that lets me do self-hosted sync like I've been doing for years.
Here's the missing component I'd like help with: I want to find a *truly* self-hosted option to publish my notes on Obsidian. With my current Joplin server, I can click "Publish note" in the user interface and have an easily-sharable link to send to whomever wants it. That note is hosted on a server that's fully under my control. Doing this with Obsidian seems like it will require a decent amount of hacking-around to get working properly.
Do y'all have any good options here?
(I'll put some specifics in a reply below, so if you're gonna respond and not just boost, please read those first!)

Snow day!
Well, for me, anyway. I put in for a day off a couple of weeks ago. The snow's just a nice coincidence. 😁

On that note, if anyone needs an original Dream Machine (https://store.ui.com/us/en/products/udm), I'd be happy to pass it along to someone who could use it! It's been very kind to me—running basically without issues since March 2020. My only reason for replacing it was that it didn't support Unifi Protect.

With all the password-manager-related conversation fluttering about, I realized that I haven’t talked much about my password manager setup, and that I really ought to fix that. 🧵

Learned yesterday that I"ll be heading to #NewYorkCity next Sunday/Monday/Tuesday. My work/hotel will have me in Midtown Manhattan near Hudson Yards.
I realize it's probably a *very* tall order, but do y'all know of any cozy/quiet spots in the area? Always a fan of a good #speakeasy or similar.

Considering replacing this with #TheLounge; I'd love to hear from folks with experiences with this. I poked a bit at IRC in the past, but the user experience in the context of modern ecosystems was rough. It sounds like this would fix a lot of those problems.

#Ubuntu2410 has been performing *really* well on my laptop/desktop hardware.
I'm going to take the plunge and install it on my server this week. It'll also give me an opportunity to do some other cleanup:
- Getting LVM properly set up to gain some Plex storage space I'd otherwise miss out on.
- Moving away from Wordpress for my blog-that-I-never-use. Honestly, it was overkill for what I wanted anyway.
- Moving away from Ubuntu Desktop to Ubuntu Server. I was thinking about making my server remotely accessible via RDP, but I've found myself not using that functionality for a number of reasons.I already spent a few minutes today figuring out how to expose my graphics card to my Plex container for transcoding, and damn did that make a difference.

Well what do you know, it worked like a charm! 🎉
I have the relevant extensions for my password database and my note taking app working from the Snap version of Firefox in #ubuntu2410. The permissions box popped up for the former exactly as I hoped it would.

Oh, and it maybe goes without saying, but upgrading to #ubuntu2410 *will* install Snap-based Firefox on upgrade, so make sure you go remove it and re-enable the Mozilla PPA if you're using that like I am. (My pinning configuration for the package and override for the auto-upgrade system was still in place, so that's nice.)

Just finished reviewing a resume for a friend...been a while since I've done a resume review!
I also realized I haven't really offered that service in this space, so I wanted to take a quick opportunity to fix that. If you or someone you know needs a #ResumeReview for an IT-focused role, I'd be happy to connect with you and provide my insights.
I spent a *ton* of time looking at resumes and screening/interviewing in my previous role, so I try to take every opportunity I can to help candidates make a good impression and put their best foot forward.
The Linktree in my bio has lots of potential ways to get in touch. If you decide to reach out, please reply here first so I know to expect you!

I was today years old when I learned you can stop the "shuffle" in #WindowsTaskManager (when sorting by resource usage) by holding the Control key.

Cancelled my ancient Dyn account, which was up for renewal on the eighth. I'm a little sad that I had to give up this-server.kicks-ass.org, but the move to a self-owned domain is probably better in the long run.

Oh, fine, Xfinity, I'll give in. I'll use your equipment just to avoid that stupid data cap you implemented.
But I'm putting the thing in bridged mode first chance I get!

Used to be that I'd do a #FactoryReset on my phone about once every six months to keep things clean and zippy. After the move to #android 13, I haven't really felt the need to "salt the earth," and have been letting security upgrades just roll over things.
After taking the Android 14 update this week, though, I think it's time for a clean slate. Hello fastboot, my old friend...

Just realized I don't have a proper #introduction posted yet!
I push packets (#networking) in my day job and like to tinker with related #tech on my own time. Into single-player #games with a focus on storytelling. Way too into #food science and #cocktails. The #Seattle metro area is my home; originally from #WichitaKS.
