  1. @ChristinWhite It's basically a text editor. Great for storing text. Todos, AFAIC, have dimensions to them that Obsidian cannot provide. Assigning to someone. Reminders and alarms and notifications on your phone WITHOUT running the master app. Quick add of tasks from eg the iPhone lock screen. Natural date parsing. I can put [X] inline with text until the cows come home, but it's always going to be text no matter how much the plugin fiddles the on-screen display. #TickTick is my go-to.

  2. CW: US & Global Politics / Spotify

Just canceled #Spotify, I want my music subscription to pay artists, not get invested into warfare technology. And running ads for ICE is an absolute dealbreaker.

Not sure Apple is much better at this point but I’m pretty deeply invested in their ecosystem — for now — so I may go back to Apple Music.

Might try TIDAL first though, they apparently have one of the highest rates that they pay artists.

  3. Mandragora is out! If you like #SoulsLikes, #Metroidvanias or #DarkFantasy it looks like a must play. After being a Kickstarter backer I’m excited to finally dive in with the full release! youtube.com/watch?v=gC0q8U0iXx

  4. Anyone familiar with the #Yep search engine? Privacy policy looks decent, they aren’t a metasearch engine and have an interesting revenue sharing model.

They do include LLM content but it’s not a chat interface, just a tasteful summary similar to how Neeva did it. I personally find that type of summary useful and it's off to the side on a large window and truncated at the top of the results for a small window, not the focus of the UI.

It's a bit on the slow side and doesn't have a lot of power features like !bangs unfortunately. 😢

The company behind it, ahrefs (good name), makes SEO tools that seems to be heavily invested in AI and 'no personal data stored’ analytics. Based in Singapore.

  5. Maple 7 is out and damn is it a gorgeous, open-source, variable weight monospace font with superb italics, ligatures, nerd font symbols and Chinese support and a ton of options.

I'm not sure it's going to replace my beloved MonoLisa as my primary monospace font but I’m going to give it a shot.

I really like the small gaps option.

  7. Huh, #Stract is interesting. Open-source, no Silicon Valley VC funding, independent index, power features and customization, no sign of AI to be found (and no discussion of it on the repo). They certainly have my attention.

Oh, and yes, of course it's mostly written in #rust.

  8. Playing with #NotePlan this last week as my task manager, planner and daily log has been really instructive. Having it open on iOS and be instantly ready to start working, no long ‘loading plugins’ phase is a serious advantage over #Obsidian and it’s made me think that I’d love two ways to interact with Obsidian. One as my full #PKM, the other as a streamlined, preferably native daily notes app that both use the same vault. Ultimately, I think what I really want are vault syncing APIs.

  13. One of my partner’s favorite games is #StarControl2, particularly the open-source fork. I finally decided to give it a try and we’re playing together. So far it’s delightful and surprisingly modern in narrative if a bit dated on mechanics. I can definitely see the influence it had on Mass Effect, No Man’s Sky and choice-driven RPGs in general.

I can’t help but wonder if Craig Alanson played it too, it reminds me a ton of Expeditionary Force, one of my favorite recent sci-fi book series. The client species hierarchy and the wacky aliens in particular.

The Steam version is free and easy to run on modern systems (at least Mac).

  14. #TerryBrooks is retiring and passing the torch for Shannara to live on with a new author taking the reigns. Despite how deritivee the Shannara series when I was a around 10, shortly after I read Narnia and Lord of the Rings myself for the first time. It was a formative influence on me as a #fantasy literature fan and that has ensured it will always be dear to me.

There are still some standouts in the series too, I think his Word and the Void trilogy was the most creative thing he's ever done and remains a masterpiece. Meanwhile, The Genesis of Shannara remains simply the most fun I've had with any part of the series. Especially as the post apocalyptic bridge between The Word and the Void and Shannara proper. It didn’t hurt that it was finally the confirmation that they were connected and took place in the the universe and time I suspected all along but hadn’t yet been confirmed.

Over the years, many newer authors have surpassed the series in epic fantasy in my view and there were certainly missteps along the way. The end of the timeline, for instance, fell completely flat for me. Nevertheless it's quite an accomplishment and deserves to be celebrated for the influence on the genre and in helping to create or cement many other fantasy readers like myself.

Congrats to Terry, well done and I look forward to seeing where Delilah Dawson takes the world of Shannara going forward, not to mention familiarizing myself with her other work.

I do Shawn Speakman was at least offered the opportunity as author in his own right and has been central to the fandom as the a continuity editor for the quite a while and run both Terry's site and the Shannara subreddit.

  17. Walter Inglis, Presbyterian minister to Southern Africa, on the religious entitlement of the Dutch migrants. The oppressed, enslaved, robbed the locals, and set up apartheid..

He opposed things which caused suffering & barriers to evangelism. The Dutch brought dangerous doctrinal errors which he fought.

  18. Just trying #PennysBigBreakaway: great mix of #SuperMario Odyssey (yo-yo-based moveset), #Kirby and the Forgotten Land (level design), #Sonic Mania (momentum, graphic style, aesthetics) and #SuperMarioGalaxy (power-up time, missions in the level). Evolves extra lives & gameover in -10k points if you lose all attempts, then redo level or from last checkpoint. Lots of hedonistic NPCs with funny dialogues and lots of mass attack penguins. The faith in #ChristianWhitehead & #TeeLopes was worth it

  20. Alexander Whyte, was a moderator of the Free Church of Scotland. Here he considers the prison population in his time. He says they haven’t had the same advantages and opportunities as we have. Yet he doesn’t say that the crimes are therefore excused : they incriminate the soul.

Is this what would be called “soft on crime”, to blame society?

How can you help others with less advantages; help those in “sunken places”?
