  2. Annual ophthalmology visit: retinas still holding steady, no worsening of posterior vitreous detachment, "that's a really big floater in your left eye!," reading glasses holding steady at +2, "see you next year." Annual physical/wellness visit: looking good, get your thyroid levels checked again, it's been a while; see you next year. 2 down, 3 other annual specialists to go, currently scheduled for June, July, August.

  3. Some people still "give something up for Lent." My mom, for example, gives up red meat for all of Lent. If you are doing something similar, this is a reminder that cheese does not raise cholesterol levels the way other full-fat dairy products do, so this is permission to get your protein by putting cheese on *everything*.

  4. Last night was BFMS' annual Midwinter Ball. A few of the regulars couldn't make it because their cars weren't dug out yet, but the church hall where the dance is held had adequate plowing in the parking lot, so somewhere around 85-90 of us were able to dance to great music. The band played a little on the fast side, and more repeats than usual, to make sure we all stayed warm. I had never danced a dance with a backward progression before!

  5. Stale #pfeffernüsse cookies are one of my favorite things. When they're almost hard as rocks, the flavor gets concentrated, and they're extremely dunkable in a hot beverage such as hot cocoa. So I buy them at Lidl at the beginning of December, and aroundthe end of January they're perfect. Right now they're a bit too soft still.

  6. I have been trying to learn the Ukrainian carol "Dobryy Vechir Tobi" and while a literal translation of "Dobryy vechir tobi, pane hospodaryu" is "Good evening to thee, master/landowner/lord" it would only need a little bit of poetic license to translate that as "God rest ye merry, gentlemen." The things I digress to while overthinking something!

  12. Is there any correlation between neurodiversity and having/not having an inner monologue/soundtrack, or do roughly the same % of both ND and NT people experience the monologue and/or soundtrack? (Using just "monologue" for space reasons; NT=neurotypical)

  13. JoAnn's closing virtually all stores by April will be a problem for sewists. The other 2 big craft chains don't stock much fabric; local quilt shops generally don't stock knits, rayon, denim, gauze and other clothes-making staples. And as far as I know, JoAnn's is THE major outlet for the big pattern companies - I suspect this will be close to a death blow for Simplicity/McCalls/Butterick/Vogue. So now would be a good time for #sewists to stock up on copies of your staple #SewingPatterns.

  14. For those of you who live within an hour or so of Arlington, VA, it's worth it to come at least to the evening concerts. Everything is free, but you have to go thru base security. The only place civilians can buy food and eat on base is the bowling alley.
If you ever played any band instrument at all, these concerts are worth going to; the service bands, and particularly the Army Band (Pershing's Own) and Marine Band (President's Own) are the best bands in this hemisphere. #tuba #euphonium

  21. #yarnuary Favorite tools? I'm a Bates crochet hook person - the two styles are Bates and Boye, and they differ in tapering point of the hook, shape of the throat, and placement of the thumb. Judging by what's in my big can o' hooks, my favorites are plastic L (8mm) hooks and metal H (5mm) hooks. It has been my unscientific observation that in general, knife hold/overhand crocheters tend to prefer Bates, and pen hold/underhand crocheters tend to prefer Boye.

  22. If you sing each line of Frere Jacques only once, you can sing Frere Jacques, Row Row Row Your Boat, and Pop Goes The Weasel as a round*, sounding /very/ complicated.

*Or a catch, or a glee, the definitions have changed over the years and aren't always consistent. But with different melodies in each part, round is the most general term.

  24. So many people are doing #intro posts, and I guess the purpose is "why should you follow me, and why am I following you?"
