  1. @BrianPierce there’s not much good about living in Idaho these days, but the #IdahoStop remains one the good things! If our current legislators understood it they would no doubt get rid of it. 🤨

  2. @BrianPierce @DrEvanGowan I’m aware of #glacial #kettle #ponds on #CapeCod, but not in #tidal #wetland settings like this. I am wondering whether a kettle could persist for ~ 12 ka as meters of #sediment and #peat accumulate in the #marsh as #sealevelrise floods the #estuary during the #Holocene. @Anthro’s suggestion of #hydraulic scouring, or something similar, may be the explanation. Much to learn! Thanks for your post. #Massachusetts #geology #Boston #geoscience

  3. A leading marine biologist the industry once relied on to burnish its environmental credentials has since denounced krill fishing.

Helena Herr, who studies whales at the University of Hamburg, was invited in 2021 by Arata's group to serve on an advisory panel. She accepted with the hope that she could help mitigate the effects of krill fishing on the Antarctic ecosystem.

She resigned after a year, disgusted by what she viewed as the industry’s narrow focus on the buffer zones.

“The more I learned about the voluntary commitment and its review process, the more I perceived the voluntary commitment as a ‘green-washing’ initiative,” she said in a resignation letter to her fellow panel members, a copy of which she provided the AP, using a term that refers to businesses making inaccurate claims that its actions are friendly to the environment.

Today, she believes that krill fishing should be banned.

Would like to see #Mazda finally put the #Wankel to good use use as a light weight range extender on an #EREV

  9. @arstechnica

We loved it on our test drive but were concerned about its low reliability rating with #consumerreports .

As best we could tell, it's still apparently having ICCU and 12 volt failures, occasionally with long waits for parts, despite several recalls in the past few years.

Would have loved to get one but we went with a more reliable #toyota #RAV4 #PHEV for the next 3 years.

    We didn't look at #Tesla because we're not fascists.😉

Good question, would make a good legal/IT article or blog subject.
Lots of folks from #medtwitter went to #bluesky #medsky instead of #medmastodon
I wonder how long before Bluesky has to bend the knee since it is US based.

    Broken clocks...

It won't outweigh the deaths he'll cause in so many other ways and I expect he'll do this in the worse way possible but #cms using #americanmedicalassociation copyrighted CPT codes has not been a good thing.

  12. #medsky is already more lively and useful than #medmastodon for physicians who left #medtwitter
#mastodon or a fork of it could be more user friendly. The #linux vs #mac analogy is apt.
I worry that US based #bluesky is vulnerable to the same pressure to obey in advance like the #washingtonpost , #latimes and #msnbc.

  13. I'm pondering what to do for my patients if/when our access to vaccines dries up thanks to #rfk_jr and the #bostonglobe puts a #nytimes health section fluff piece on that dangerous liar on Boston.com this morning.
How about an article about how his lies killed 83 from measles in Samoa?

I work on writing persuasively for ads and public health time posts as well as using #motivationalinterviewing in the office with patients.
I wouldn't be surprised if AIs could be trained to help with these or techniques like smart politics podcast used to teach.

OTOH, there's more money in marketing and spreading misinformation so, even if some of us use these for good, this is just another round in an arms race .

  15. Well that didn't take long. Our #HarrisWalz sign hadn't been up a week before getting tagged by #maga vandals here in #maine

That motivated me to donate again to Harris, #jaredgolden and #mainedemocrats

This is too close, donate or volunteer or both: mobilize.us/MaineDems/

The dam is turning into a quite the local fight with the restaurants and some residents not wanting any changes but it's obsolete, blocks fish and needs maintenance.
I think a restoration of the original falls could be just as pretty.
Where I grew up (Mass) we had herring runs every spring. That could give downtown Camden a little tourism boost before the big summer crowds come.

  17. @karencookphotos

It'd likely be better or just as good. Those falls are natural, only the top edge from the dam would be replaced by an irregular rocks at the top with the usual falls just below that.

The return of alewives without that dam would give you more eagles, ospreys etc. feeding on them each spring.

We live on the St. George River where they removed their fish blocking obsolete dam 20 years ago.
