Cooled from our #WildSwim days at Lac des Montagnès we headed on to a campsite in central #Carcassonne, the finalé of our trip. Back in Feb we saw Ludovico #Einaudi in #Australia at #SydneyOperaHouse & this was our chance for a repeat #concert in another iconic venue - #TheatreJeanDeschamps amphithéâtre in La Cité. And what a venue! We strolled the busy streets of the citadel enjoying the smells of food & flowers before taking our seats for the performance - a magical night. #France

Next stop was at #Cahors. We lucked out & bagged the final spot of three at a lovely free riverside aire & dandered into the centre. We took in the main squares, cathedral & the impressive Pont Valentré. We walked into the centre again later, checking out other details we’d missed. Early next morning Nicky did a mat session as I left for 9k #running around Cahors, first crossing Pont de Cabessut then a teardrop-shaped loop on both sides of the river that crossed under and over #PontValentré.

With a new #HomeExchange family in, we’re off to explore #France again. First stop in Villeneuve-sur-Lot for stage 12 of the #TourdeFrance. We visited the beautiful hilltop town of #Pugols, before continuing #cycling to the centre where we tried out penny farthings amidst music, beer & buzz. We cycled out towards #Monflanquin to watch the caravane & grab some goodies, then hurried back to Villeneuve centre to witness the final sprint. They flew past us at 1km out in a blur of colour & noise.

We entered a great #SwimRun event at St Estephe lake, 40 mins south, arriving the day before due to a 9.30m start. Nicky planned to walk rather than run, but her competitive side took over & she ran it all, finishing 2nd in her age category. I felt sluggish & slow, but somehow finished first in my age category, 8th overall, over the shortest distance (1 lap: 5.6k #running, 1.8k #swimming in 13 segments). Others did two or three laps of the same course, some arriving in over 3 hrs later! [06/24]

Back home, we’ve been out #cycling lots, colouring in all routes within about 20k of our house. Each trip out we’re finding new chemins & sentiers, even after six years. We’ve interspersed these cycles with long swims at #Chalus #lido and the occasional #trailrun.
For family reasons we have made the big decision to return to the UK, and have marketed & sold our French home in record time. So, this is to be our last summer living in #France - have to make it a memorable one! [06/24]

We passed a few rainy days near #Parentis-en-Born, watching groups of kids learn sailing, and hiked an overgrown river-side walk into the town centre. Then we moved south to St #Eulalie-en-Born, finding a spacious €5 #motorhome aire on grass with an outdoor shower. We enjoyed 32k of #cycling to #Mimizan followed by a 15k walk around the perimeter of lac #Aureilhan, starting at the beautiful Promenade Fleurie gardens. Twice we cycled to nearby #Gastes for a cooling 2k #wildswim. [06/24]

Leaving #Lacanau we moved south to #Navarrosse on the shores of Lac de #Sanguinet. We enjoyed a few exploratory walks & a 2k #wildswim parallel to the local beach. The lac was shallow, rarely over our chests, the water sometimes too shallow to swim properly. We even passed an exercising group walking in formation across the bay. We had a few #cycling jaunts, one to #Biscarrosse town in stifling heat, another to Biscarrosse Plage for a sea swim & some chill beach time. [06/24]

We received a last minute #HomeExchange request from a Spanish couple and were happy to quickly plan a #motorhome trip away for the duration of their visit. We found an event and headed southwest to #Gironde to a campsite on the western shore of Etang de Lacanau. We had entered a 2k lake swim happening in a few days, but first there was #cycling to do, an ocean to see and many local beaches to explore. #Swimming (06/24)

I’ve been reading a lot of #books this spring, and offer these recommendations:
Darkness at Noon by Arthur Koestler - An older book that encapsulates the internecine yet intellectual madness of loyalists within the #Stalinist purges.
Prophet Song by Paul Lynch - a powerfully #dystopian tale of Ireland incrementally slipping into a fascist dictatorship.
#Bothy by Kat Hill - an evocative tale of the history & usage of bothies intermixed with a personal journey of loss, grief and growth. [05/24]

Stir-crazy at home, we planned a #motorhome weekend away at local lake #Vassivière, 1.5 hrs away. The campsite we had planned to stay in was overrun with thousands of motorbike enthusiasts there for a music festival. Instead we wild parked on the quiet opposite shore & enjoyed several long swims (one a circumnavigation of an island), an outing in our kayak (with Nicky swimming back the last 1.6k), and an island-lapping run to finish. Always a special place. #WildSwim #Kayaking #Running [05/24]

Our last stop in #Shropshire was #Telford to see the #IronBridge. Spanning the river Severn, it's a famous landmark for being the first major bridge built of cast iron. We enjoyed a museum visit & a slow wander up the town to cross on foot. We learned the bridge was once crossed by an elephant as part of a successful marketing ploy by a visiting circus. It remained a toll road (charging for animal passage, pedestrians & even royalty) until 1950 when it passed into public ownership. [04/24]

We took a bus to #Coogee beach & walked south along the coast. Braving steep slippy steps, we took our first dip in Ivo Rowe #rockpool, floating supine as waves crashed nearby. Next dip was in Rob Walker rockpool, tickled by wrinkled, lime-coloured seaweed. We crossed an expanse of flat rocks at Manly Parade Lookout, then a third #wildswim in Mahon sea pool, with foaming waves breaking over the wall. A short walk on we reached #Maroubra Beach where we lunched under tall palms. #Sydney #Australia

Sadly, our time in beautiful #Brisbane has ended. Our #HomeExchange host kindly offered us a lift to the airport & soon we were back in #Sydney, now based in #Redfern. Our first day we took the light rail to Circular Quay & the ferry to #Manly. We walked the length of the beach, swam the sea pool, investigated a wormhole, then crossed the headland to #Freshwater beach. Multiple dips, another sea pool and a final #wildswim in Manly Cove as we awaited a return ferry. What a start! #Australia
